look? Do you think this is a positive or negative development?
The decision to undergo cosmetic surgery is increasingly prevalent as individuals seek to
enhance their aesthetic appeal. This essay explores the rationale behind this growing
trend and considers whether this is a positive or negative development.
The primary motivation leading individuals to consider cosmetic surgery is the quest to
boost their self-confidence. In contemporary society, the media and societal norms
heavily emphasize the importance of physical appeal, driving many to modify their
appearance in order to meet these established benchmarks. For example, an individual
may decide to have rhinoplasty if they have spent years feeling insecure about their nose.
The outcome of the surgery could provide them with an elevated sense of self-assurance,
thus improving their overall life satisfaction.
Notwithstanding these factors, the surge in cosmetic surgery might be met with doubt.
While it offers people the liberty to change their bodies, possibly enhancing their selfassurance, it is also a double-edged sword. The societal emphasis on physical
attractiveness could erode self-esteem, particularly for those who lack the financial
means for such procedures. Besides, surgeries inherently involve health hazards, like
complications after the operation or discontent with the outcome, which could aggravate
the mental health issues they intended to address.
In conclusion, while cosmetic surgery may offer a pathway to enhanced self-confidence,
it's crucial to weigh these benefits against the potential drawbacks. Fostering a more
inclusive perception of beauty, one that celebrates diversity in appearances, would be a
healthier approach. Cosmetic surgery should not be seen as the ultimate remedy to
issues related to self-esteem, and due care should be taken to assess the potential risks
involved.

English's ascendance as a global language is indeed a double-edged sword. Although its
proliferation carries numerous benefits, there are also drawbacks that stir tension among
different communities. I partially agree that the advantages outweigh the disadvantages, as
the situation can be quite nuanced.
On the positive side, the spread of English has been spurred by technological advancements
that facilitate communication on a global scale. English proficiency has become a valuable
asset, enhancing job prospects and enabling individuals to participate more fully in the global
economy. For instance, in the tech sector, a good command of English opens doors to
collaborate with international teams, partake in global conferences, and tap into a wider pool
of resources, thereby promoting personal and professional growth.
However, these benefits can breed resentment, particularly among non-native speakers. The
dominance of English can erode linguistic diversity and threaten cultural identity. If
individuals feel compelled to prioritize English over their native language, they might
experience a sense of loss or even fear of linguistic imperialism. This can undermine selfesteem and lead to a broader cultural homogenization, with local languages and traditions
being marginalized.
Moreover, the pressure to learn English can exacerbate educational inequalities. Those who
lack access to quality English education might be disadvantaged in the global job market,
reinforcing existing socio-economic disparities. Thus, while English serves as a unifying force
in many ways, it can also widen the gap between different social groups.
In conclusion, English as a global language presents a mixed bag of benefits and drawbacks.
While it undeniably facilitates communication and enhances job prospects, its dominance
can also undermine cultural identity and exacerbate social inequalities. Therefore, the spread
of English should be accompanied by measures to protect linguistic diversity and ensure

Some people think that the increasing use of computers and mobile phones for
communication has a negative effect on young people’s reading and writing skills. To
what extent do you agree or disagree?
In an increasingly digital era, some individuals believe that escalating reliance on computers
and mobile devices for interpersonal communication adversely impacts the reading and
writing capabilities of the younger generation. While this argument holds some validity, I, on
the contrary, am of the opinion that the influence of modern technology can be harnessed
positively to enhance these fundamental skills.
There are credible reasons to support the assertion that the pervasive use of electronic
devices could impede young people's literacy development. Firstly, digital communication
often employs an informal, abbreviated language style which, if used excessively, could
potentially weaken their formal language proficiency. In Vietnam, for instance, text messages
and social media platforms are rife with "net-speak" and emojis, a stark departure from
standard written Vietnamese. Consequently, this shift may lead to difficulties in understanding
and producing complex grammatical structures and vocabulary in a formal context, leading to
an overall decline in writing skills.
However, I believe that the rise of digital communication also presents a plethora of
opportunities to bolster literacy skills. Though informal language is commonplace, it does not
necessarily signify a decrease in reading and writing abilities; rather, it represents a different,
albeit less traditional, form of literacy. Young Vietnamese, through daily online interactions,
are exposed to a wealth of written language in a context that they find engaging and relevant.
This routine exposure can significantly enhance their reading fluency. Furthermore, the digital
world offers countless resources to aid in improving traditional literacy. For instance, online
language learning platforms provide structured courses to elevate writing skills, while e-books
and online articles cater to diverse reading interests.
To encapsulate, while there are concerns regarding the detrimental impact of digital
communication on young people's literacy skills, I maintain that this trend can be manipulated
constructively to enhance reading and writing abilities. In this age of rapid digital progression,
it is pivotal to adapt educational strategies to harness the potential of technology, rather than
opposing its inevitable proliferation.

residing in peripheral areas or individuals working irregular hours. Although this perspective carries
merit, it is vital to remember that these issues can be mitigated through efficient urban planning,

A fundamental advantage of implementing vehicle-free days is the significant decrease in pollution
levels. Motorized vehicles are principal contributors to air pollution, exacerbating environmental

detrimental pollutants. Cities like Delhi and Beijing have reported substantial reductions in air
pollution on the implementation of such initiatives.
Moreover, the alleviation of traffic congestion is another significant advantage. City centres are
notorious for traffic congestion, leading to extended commute time and reduced productivity.
During vehicle-free days, traffic congestion is considerably mitigated, leading to smoother transit
and promoting the usage of public transportation. Thus, despite minor inconveniences that can be
addressed, the benefits of vehicle-free days are significant and impact the overall quality of life in
the city positively.
In conclusion, while vehicle-free days may pose minor inconveniences to some, it is clear that the
far-reaching benefits, including environmental well-being and improved traffic flow, greatly
overshadow the drawbacks. Therefore, the implementation of vehicle-free days is an
advantageous and impactful measure that warrants serious consideration for wider adoption

In the modern era, traditional forms of media such as newspapers and TV programs are
being replaced by the internet as a primary source of news for many people. In my
opinion, there are both positive and negative aspects of this development.
On the one hand, learning news from the Internet is advantageous in certain ways. First, it
has made it easier for people to access news from a variety of sources at any time. Unlike
newspapers and TV programs, which are only available at certain times, the internet
provides 24/7 access to breaking news and current events. Additionally, the internet has
enabled people to access news from around the world, giving them a broader perspective
on global events. For instance, someone in London can learn about the latest
developments in Sydney or New York with just a few clicks.
On the other hand, relying solely on the internet for news can have some negative
consequences. Firstly, the internet is not always a reliable source of information, as there
is a lot of fake news and misinformation circulating online. Secondly, people may only
read news articles that reinforce their existing beliefs and biases, leading to a polarized
society where people are not exposed to diverse perspectives. Finally, the internet can
also lead to a loss of face-to-face communication and community cohesion, which are
important for maintaining a healthy society.
In conclusion, while the internet provides many benefits for accessing news, it is
important to be aware of the potential negative consequences. It is important for people
to use critical thinking skills and seek out reliable sources of information. Additionally,
society should strive to maintain face-to-face communication and community cohesion

Educational establishments are frequently considered as having a duty to impart not just
academic learning but also moral conduct. While this is a viewpoint with notable validity, my
position is that families and societal influence significantly contribute to the ethical
development of a child.
On one hand, schools indeed serve as a critical hub for behavioral instruction. Here,
youngsters are introduced to various social situations, ranging from collaboration on a group
project to peaceful conflict resolution, which may indirectly instill in them the essence of good
manners. Additionally, numerous schools in Vietnam have integrated subjects such as civic
education into their curriculum, demonstrating an active role in moral guidance. However, it
should be recognized that if schools were to bear this responsibility alone, the outcome might
be a homogenized behavioral pattern, as schools generally enforce a standardized set of rules.
Furthermore, the overemphasis on moral lessons could detract from the core educational
mandate, possibly undermining academic performance.
However, I believe that family environment and societal norms play a more decisive role in
shaping an individual's conduct. The crux of this argument is that home is the first school for
any child, where foundational moral values are often instilled. A Vietnamese child, for instance,
is taught from a young age about the importance of respect for elders, a core cultural value in
Vietnamese society. Additionally, society acts as a mirror, reflecting the behavioral
expectations and norms to the child. For example, community events in Vietnam, such as the
Mid-Autumn Festival, cultivate in children the values of sharing and communal harmony. This
immersion in real-life societal scenarios may exert a stronger, more nuanced influence on a
child's behavior than the more theoretical lessons in a school setting.
In conclusion, while schools can play a part in moral education, I maintain that the
responsibility for fostering good behavior predominantly lies within families and society.
Recognizing this dynamic would allow for a more comprehensive approach towards
cultivating the future pillars of our community, thereby harmoniously blending formal
education with moral upbringing.

Advertisements are becoming more and more common in everyday life. Is it a
positive or negative development?
It is undeniable that the ubiquity of advertisements has grown exponentially in our daily
lives. The question of whether this growth represents a favourable trend or a detestable
development, however, is a matter of contention.
There are those who view this growing prevalence of advertisements as a beneficial
development, particularly from an economic perspective. In Vietnam, for instance,
advertising plays a vital role in stimulating consumption, thereby invigorating the national
economy. Furthermore, it is often through these commercials that consumers learn about
new products and services, making informed choices possible. Nevertheless, this
argument could be countered on the grounds that the sheer volume of advertisements
can lead to information overload. An inundation of promotional content may eventually
bewilder consumers, obscuring their decision-making rather than assisting it.
However, I firmly believe that the increasingly pervasive presence of advertisements
constitutes more of a bane than a boon. The primary concern is that many
advertisements, subtly or not, create a culture of materialism and excessive consumption.
If we take the city of Ho Chi Minh as an example, where billboards and digital screens are
everywhere, we may see that individuals are persistently exposed to messages
encouraging them to buy more, often beyond their means or needs. Moreover, adverts
can manipulate public perceptions and choices. Advertisers often employ psychological
tactics to make their products more appealing, such as using celebrity endorsements,
which could potentially mislead the consumers. Should the advertised product or service
fail to meet the lofty expectations set, consumers would invariably face disappointment.
In conclusion, despite some potential benefits of advertising, I am of the opinion that its
pervasiveness is more of a negative development. It is crucial to ensure that consumers

Admittedly, those advocating for the shift towards online shopping underscore several
compelling reasons. Firstly, this modality provides unparalleled convenience, as it obviates the
need to navigate through congested streets or stand in lengthy queues, a circumstance
undoubtedly relatable in bustling metropolises like Ho Chi Minh City or Hanoi. Additionally, ecommerce platforms often offer a broader array of products, further supplemented by
customer reviews, which assist Vietnamese consumers in making informed choices. Yet,
despite these seeming benefits, this trend raises significant concerns. Specifically, it impairs
the social element intrinsic to traditional shopping, which, in Vietnam, is often a communal
activity that fosters interpersonal relationships and contributes to the vibrancy of local
markets.
However, I believe that the emergence of online shopping can be perceived as a positive
development if we scrutinize the broader economic implications. E-commerce platforms can
serve as a catalyst for businesses in Vietnam to extend their market reach. Small-scale
artisans in remote provinces, for instance, now have the potential to showcase their products
to an international audience, thus augmenting their income and local economy. This process

Nowadays, more and more people decide to have children later in their life. What do
you think are the reasons for this? Do the advantages of this trend outweigh the
disadvantages?
In our modern world, there's a notable shift towards people choosing to have children
later in life. This trend carries both benefits and drawbacks. The advantages, which
primarily relate to career progression and economic security, are contrasted by the
disadvantages that predominantly concern health issues. Yet, from my perspective, the
positives slightly tip the scale against the negatives.
Firstly, one of the primary benefits of choosing to have children later is the chance it gives
people to concentrate on personal growth and career advancement. The decision to
delay starting a family often coincides with a more secure career position and an
increased income. This stability doesn't just provide a more comfortable lifestyle for the
child, but also alleviates much of the financial strain that comes with raising a child,
fostering a more conducive family environment. Also, it stands to reason that those who
have experienced more of life before starting a family might be better equipped to handle
parenthood. With age often comes patience, wisdom, and maturity - attributes that are
undeniably beneficial in navigating the challenges of raising children.
Nevertheless, opting for late parenthood isn't without its disadvantages, the most
significant of which is the amplified health risks for both mother and child. With increasing
age comes an increased risk of genetic issues and pregnancy complications. Besides,
older parents might find the physical demands of caring for young children challenging
and may not be around to see their children reach significant milestones.
In conclusion, despite the undeniable risks associated with postponing parenthood, the
benefits it presents in terms of economic stability and personal maturity are hard to
ignore. Every individual or couple should consider these benefits and drawbacks when
planning when to start their family.

Historical objects should be brought back to their country of origin. To what extent
do you agree or disagree?
The issue of whether historical objects should be returned to their country of origin is
often a topic of debate. Some people are of the opinion that these artefacts should be
returned home, while others think they should remain in the museums of the countries
that currently possess them. Although I can see merit in both views, I would tend to side
with the former.
One of the main arguments for returning cultural objects to their country of origin is the
notion of cultural heritage. The artefacts represent the historical and cultural essence of a
nation and, therefore, arguably belong to the people of that nation. Moreover, a
significant proportion of these historical treasures were taken during periods of
colonization, which adds a moral dimension to the discussion.
However, there is also a valid argument to be made for keeping these artefacts in
international museums. Museums such as the British Museum make these objects
accessible to a global audience, promoting international cultural understanding.
Furthermore, these museums are equipped with advanced preservation technology,
which may not be available in the artefacts' countries of origin.
In spite of these arguments, I still believe that these objects should be returned to their
home countries. This does not mean that they cannot be loaned to international museums
for special exhibitions, which would still allow for global access. This approach would
acknowledge the cultural ownership of these artefacts while also ensuring their
accessibility.
In conclusion, although there are valid arguments for keeping historical objects in
international museums, I believe that these artefacts should be returned to their countries
of origin. It is important to strike a balance between acknowledging cultural ownership
and ensuring these objects can be accessed by people around the world.
