Introduction
Foreword
This manual is written for an experienced technician.
Essential tools required in performing certain service
work are identified in this manual and are
recommended for use.
Live with safety: Read the safety messages in the
introduction of this manual and the cautions presented
throughout the text of the manual.
This is the safety-alert symbol. When you see this
symbol on the machine or in this manual, be alert to
the potential for personal injury.
Use this Component Technical Manual in conjunction
with the machine Technical Manual. An application
listing in the introduction identifies
product-model/component type-model relationship. See
the machine technical manual for information on
component removal and installation, and gaining
access to the components.
Component Technical Manuals are concise service
guides for specific components. Component Technical
Manuals are written as stand-alone manuals covering
multiple machine applications.
Fundamental service information is available from
other sources covering basic theory of operation,
fundamentals of troubleshooting, general maintenance,
and basic type of failures and their causes.

heat a wheel and tire assembly. The heat can cause an
increase in air pressure resulting in a tire explosion.
Welding can structurally weaken or deform the wheel.
TS211
Check wheels for low pressure, cuts, bubbles, damaged
rims or missing lug bolts and nuts.
–UN–23AUG88
When inflating tires, use a clip-on chuck and extension
hose long enough to allow you to stand to one side and
NOT in front of or over the tire assembly. Use a safety
cage if available.

Safety Information
L124515
When servicing front-wheel drive tractor with the rear
wheels supported off the ground and rotating wheels by
engine power, always support front wheels in a similar
manner. Loss of electrical power or transmission/
hydraulic system pressure will engage the front driving
wheels, pulling the rear wheels off the support if front
wheels are not raised. Under these conditions, front drive
wheels can engage even with switch in disengaged
position.

Dispose of Waste Properly
Use leakproof containers when draining fluids. Do not use
food or beverage containers that may mislead someone
into drinking from them.
Do not pour waste onto the ground, down a drain, or into
any water source.
–UN–26NOV90
Improperly disposing of waste can threaten the
environment and ecology. Potentially harmful waste used
with John Deere equipment include such items as oil, fuel,
coolant, brake fluid, filters, and batteries.

10
Air conditioning refrigerants escaping into the air can
damage the Earth’s atmosphere. Government regulations
may require a certified air conditioning service center to
recover and recycle used air conditioning refrigerants.
Inquire on the proper way to recycle or dispose of waste
from your local environmental or recycling center, or from
your John Deere dealer.

Mixing of Lubricants
In general, avoid mixing different brands or types of oil.
Oil manufacturers blend additives in their oils to meet
certain specifications and performance requirements.
Consult your John Deere dealer to obtain specific
information and recommendations.
Mixing different oils can interfere with the proper
functioning of these additives and degrade lubricant
performance.

Lubricant Storage
Your equipment can operate at top efficiency only
when clean lubricants are used.
Make certain that all containers are properly marked to
identify their contents.
Use clean containers to handle all lubricants.
Properly dispose of all old containers and any residual
lubricant they may contain.
Whenever possible, store lubricants and containers in
an area protected from dust, moisture, and other
contamination. Store containers on their side to avoid
water and dirt accumulation.

General Repair Information
General Safety and Repair Information
CAUTION: When performing repair work
comply with the following repair information
as well as the safety rules given at the
beginning of this manual! See "Safety
Information" in Group 00.
NOTE: The illustrations show parts and procedure on
one axle type, repair procedures however are
the same for all axle types.
Before performing service work on front axles, clean
them thoroughly.
Specified special tools must be used for service work.
These special tools have the appropriate dimensions
and therefore correct positioning is ensured.
Damaged or excessively worn parts must be replaced.
An experienced technician must evaluate whether
parts may be re-installed which are subjected to a
normal wear process (e.g. roller bearings, thrust plates
etc.).
Always replace parts like seals, O-rings, self-locking
screws and nuts.
Before re-installation of parts remove all gasket
material from sealing surfaces of housings. Remove
any burrs etc. using a whetstone.
Take extreme care to avoid that shavings or other
foreign material remain in housing.
01
1
Apply clean hydraulic oil to all bearings before
installing them.
For heating parts (bearings for example) only
appropriate heating devices must be used (oven, hot
air blower etc.). Under no circumstances exceed
specified temperature limits!
When heated parts have been installed, reseat them
after they have cooled down to ensure correct fit.
When re-assembling the front-wheel-drive axles note
the torques for hardware and specifications for
adjustments.
Unless otherwise specified tighten bolts and nuts to
the torques listed in the enclosed charts. See
"Front-Wheel-Drive Axles - Torques for Bolts and Nuts"
in this Group.
After repair work has been completed make sure that
the front-wheel-drive axle operates correctly.
The following and additional information can be found
under "Specifications", Section 10, Group 05 of the
Repair Technical Manual.
• For capacities, see "Capacities".
• For lubricant specifications, see "Front Wheel Drive
Axle Oil".
• For grease specifications, see "Grease".
Check that lubrication bores or grooves are not
restricted.

DO NOT use these values if a different torque value or
tightening procedure is given for a specific application.
Torque values listed are for general use only. Torque
values listed are for general use only.
Make sure fasteners threads are clean and that you
properly start thread engagement. This will prevent
them from failing when tightening.
Use only a torque wrench to tighten bolts and nuts.
Fasteners should be replaced with the same or higher
grade. If higher grade fasteners are used, these should
only be tightened to the strength of the original.

For example:
Check tread basic adjustment
1. Move steering cylinder piston rod to center position.
Dimension (a), measured ............................... 273 mm (10.748 in.)
Dimension (b), measured ..................................... 3 mm (0.118 in.)
Center position, determine dimension (x):
Formula: x = (a - b) : 2
a. Remove adjusting screws for left and right
steering angle.
x = (273 mm - 3 mm) : 2 = 135 mm
(x = (10.748 in. - 0.118 in.) : 2 = 5.315 in.)
b. Determining dimension (a): Move piston rod to
r.h. stop of steering cylinder. Measure distance
between steering cylinder face (B) and axial joint
face (C).
c. Determining dimension (b): Move piston rod to
l.h. stop of steering cylinder. Measure distance
between steering cylinder face (B) and axial joint
face (C).
d. Determine dimension (x).
e. Move piston rod until the determined distance (x)
is obtained. The piston rod of steering cylinder is
now in center position.
f. Install adjusting screws for left and right steering
angle.
2. Check if distances A1 to A4 are equal. Re-adjust if
necessary.

5. Install a dial gauge and measure axial play (b).
7. Calculate shim thickness (x).
LX1033133
Specification
730, 733—Preload................................................................ 0.5 to 0.6 mm
0.020 to 0.024 in.
740, 745, 750—Preload ....................................................... 0.7 to 0.8 mm
0.027 to 0.031 in.
–UN–04JUL03
6. Predefined dimension (c) of the preload at knuckle pin
bearings.
For example:
Dimension (a), shims required to produce play ....... 2.0 mm (0.079 in.)
Dimension (b), measured axial play ........................ 0.7 mm (0.028 in.)
Dimension (c), prescribed bearing preload .............. 0.8 mm (0.031 in.)
Formula: x = a - b - c
x = 2.0 mm - 0.7 mm - 0.8 mm = 0.5 mm
(x = 0.079 in. - 0.028 in. - 0.031 in. = 0.02 in.)
In this example, total shim thickness required is 0.5
mm (0.02 in.).
8. Take out the king pin again and remove shims (a).
9. Install the appropriate shim thickness (x) at the upper
king pin.
10. Return knuckle housing to its original state, see
reference “Install Knuckle Housing” in this Group.

Bevel pinion drive shaft - cone point adjustment
LX1033160
NOTE: Figure (a) is given either as an actual dimension
(e.g. 147.65) or as a tolerance (e.g. -0.35) in
relation to the nominal dimension.
1. Read figure (a), which is prefixed with a “Z”, at the
flange on the longer axle housing.

4. Calculate shim thickness (x).
Example I, if figure given is actual dimension:
Figure (a) read on the longer axle housing ....... 147.65 mm (5.813 in.)
Figure (b) read on the bevel pinion drive shaft . 117.10 mm (4.610 in.)
Measurement (c), bearing width ......................... 29.25 mm (1.152 in.)
–UN–22AUG02
Formula: x = a - b - c
x = 147.65 mm - 117.10 mm - 29.25 mm = 1.30 mm
LX1030250
(x = 5.813 in. - 4.610 in. - 1.152 in. = 0.051 in.)
In this example, total shim thickness required is 1.30
mm (0.051 in.).
Example II, if figure given is a tolerance:
Dimension (d) — nominal dimension of axle housing
730
733
138.5 mm
(5.453 in.)
740
144.5 mm
(5.689 in.)
745
750
148.0 mm
(5.827 in.)
Figure (a), tolerance read on the axle housing .... -0.35 mm (0.014 in.)
Figure (b) read on the bevel pinion drive shaft . 117.10 mm (4.610 in.)
Measurement (c), bearing width ......................... 29.25 mm (1.152 in.)
Dimension (d), nominal dimension taken from the table (e.g. for 750) ..
............................................................................... 148.0 mm (5.827 in.)
NOTE: If tolerance figure (a) has no sign in front of it or if
it is prefixed with a “+”, it should be added to
nominal dimension (d); if it is prefixed with a “-”, it
should be subtracted from the nominal dimension.
Formula: x = d ± a - b - c
x = 148.0 mm - 0.35 mm - 117.10 mm - 29.25 mm
x = 1.30 mm
(x = 5.827 in. - 0.014 in. - 4.610 in. - 1.152 in.)
(x = 0.051 in.)
In this example, total shim thickness required is 1.30
mm (0.051 in.).

A—Front-wheel drive clutch
B—U-jointed shaft
When front wheel drive is selected on tractors
equipped with front wheel drive, all four wheels are
driven simultaneously. This increases the tractor’s
pulling power and reduces wheel slip.
Power is transmitted from the transmission to the rear
wheels via the final drives. At the same time, power is
transmitted from the transmission via front wheel drive
clutch (A) to universal jointed shaft (B), which then
drives the front wheel drive axle (C) and thus provides
power directly to the front wheels.
Front wheel drive is engaged and disengaged by
means of a rocker switch. When front wheel drive is
engaged, a solenoid valve interrupts the flow of oil to
the front wheel drive clutch. Belleville springs
C—Front-wheel drive axle
compress the disk pack in the front wheel drive clutch
and form a connection between the transmission and
front wheel drive axle. When front wheel drive is
disengaged, oil flows from the solenoid valve to the
front wheel drive clutch. The Belleville springs are
compressed by the oil pressure and the disk pack is
released. There is no longer a connection between the
transmission and the front wheel drive axle. Front
wheel drive is always engaged when the engine is
shut off, as the transmission pump stops pumping oil.
Changing the gear pair or the tire combination enables
an overrun of between 1.5 and 4% to be obtained at
the front wheel drive axle. This means that the front
wheels turn slightly faster than the rear wheels. This
improves the tractor’s traction.

F—Steering cylinder
Axle housing (A) consists of two or three parts which
are flanged together. The ends of the axle housing are
shaped like forks, to which the axle knuckle housings
(C) are attached.
Located inside the differential housing are the drive
bevel gears and bevel pinions, together with two disk
packs which permit self-locking. The differential is
designed to be self-locking. In most cases, this
prevents wheel spin when moving off and when the
machine is in motion (e.g. due to slippery conditions).
Knuckle housing
Drive shafts
Axle knuckle housings (C) provide the connection
between the axle housing and the wheel hubs (D). The
axle knuckle housings enable the axle to be steered.
Drive shafts (E) transmit power from the differential to
the wheel hubs. The universal joint on each drive shaft
compensates for the different locations of the
differential and wheel hubs.
Axle housing
Differential
Wheel hub with planetary drive
Differential (B) is located in the center of the front
wheel drive axle. The differential allows the two front
wheels to turn at different speeds, e.g. when cornering.
The differential consists of the differential housing, ring
gear and drive pinion. The drive pinion transmits power
from the universal jointed shaft to the differential.
The gears of the planetary drive (D) are driven by the
drive shaft. The planetary gears rotate around the
stationary hollow ring gear, taking the planetary carrier
and wheel hub with them. The planetary drive reduces
speed and increases torque.

Power flow when moving straight ahead
When the tractor is travelling straight ahead, the driven
ring gear (D), housing (G) with bevel pinions (E), drive
bevel gears (B) and drive shafts (A) all turn at the
same speed.
Bevel pinions (E) do not rotate around their own axes.
The two wheels are driven with equal power and at
equal speed.

Power flow when cornering
When the tractor is turning a corner, only the driven
ring gear and the housing with the bevel pinions rotate
at the same speed. As the right wheel - and thus the
right drive bevel gear - are stationary, the bevel
pinions must idle with the right drive bevel gear. As
they do so, they rotate around their own axes. The left
drive bevel gear meshes with the rotating bevel
pinions. This produces an additional drive for the left
drive bevel gear, which normally turns idly with the ring
gear when the tractor is moving straight ahead.
G—Housing
As a result, the left drive bevel gear and its associated
drive shaft turn twice for every one rotation of the ring
gear.
Thus, if the drive wheels have unequal resistance
applied to them, the wheel with the least resistance
turns faster. As one wheel turns faster, the other turns
slower by the same amount.

A—Drive bevel gear
B—Disk pack
The self-locking differential improves the driving
qualities of the machine when operating on rough and
slippery ground. The differential effect may be
eliminated completely or only partially. It prevents loss
in performance caused by slippage at the drive
wheels. Compared with a hand or pedal shift
differential, the self-locking differential has the benefit
that it limits the load on the wheel drive shafts. A
further advantage is that during actual operation, it
becomes effective immediately and automatically when
needed, without any assistance from the operator.
The locking effect is produced by two multiple disk
packs (B) positioned symmetrically in the differential
housing. Due to reaction forces generated during the
transfer of the drive torque, axial forces are produced
on the inclined surfaces of bevel pinions (C). These
C—Bevel pinion
axial forces, generated in the splines during torque
transfer, exert pressure on the disk packs via drive
bevel gears (A), which can move axially along the
drive shafts. Since the externally toothed disks engage
with the differential housing and the internally toothed
disks mesh with the drive bevel gears, relative
movement between the drive shafts and differential
housing is made more difficult.
The axial forces effect a load-dependent locking torque
in the disk packs which is always in direct proportion to
the input torque, i.e. the input torque remains
proportional to the output torque with a constant
locking effect. The locking effect therefore varies to
match the changes in engine torque and torque levels
in the various gears.

Pressure oil (F) flows from brake valve behind front
axle brake piston (E) when brake pedals are
depressed. Oil pressure forces the brake piston
against disk pack (D) thus compressing it. A
connection is formed between the externally splined
disks (H) which are connected to the stationary hollow
ring gear (C) and the internally splined disks (I) which
are connected to the universal jointed shaft (J).
I—Internally splined disk

and the universal jointed shaft is braked. The braking
effect is transmitted to the front wheels via planetary
gears (B) and planetary carrier (A).
When the brake pedals are released, oil pressure is
decreased and the springs (G) push the brake pistons
to their initial position.
With brake pressure increasing, the force exerted on
the disk pack by the brake piston increases as well
