SUBJECT: INSPECTION OF REELS AFTER PROLONGED OUTDOOR STORAGE NOTE NO: 17- 08 SECTION: 12 DATE: JULY 19, 2017 Inspection Of Reels After Prolonged Outdoor Storage Reels and their associated packaging are standardized in NEMA WC 26/EEMAC 201. Okonite recommends storing reels inside buildings or warehouses. With continuous outdoor storage of cable reels weathering and/or deformation of the reels may occur. When cable is to be installed after prolonged outdoor storage it will be necessary to review each reel for damage prior to installation. Before moving the reel the installer should: Check to see if the reel wrap has been punctured, ripped or rubbed. Confirm that no damage to or deterioration of arbors, hubs or plates has occurred. Check reels for sturdiness by hand, applying force both forward and backward against the top of the outside surface of one flange (gently shake the reel). Replace or tighten any hardware as necessary. Tighten reel if possible. If the reel was set on bare ground ensure that it has not sunken into the earth. When reels have sunken into the ground extra care must be taken when moving them as they may be difficult to lift using normal methods. Once a sunken reel has been moved it will be necessary to inspect the cable that was at the bottom of the reel. Damage to the cable may have occurred due to prolonged periods of rocks, debris, or a rough surface pressing against the cable. Any obvious deformation or punctures should be documented for further review. The inner flange surface should always be inspected before cable installation regardless of storage conditions. After periods of prolonged outdoor storage additional attention to detail is required. Any time before installation the inner flange surface must be closely inspected for: Raised nails - not countersunk. Raised staples and/or U-Nails. Nails in board cracks - not clinched into wood. Large gaps between boards that could damage product. Large wooden splinters. Warping and subsequent inward bowing of the flange. Uneven boards that could rub against the cable during installation. Any other obvious protrusions that may come in contact with the cable during installation. Method of inspection is at installer’s discretion, however it may be helpful to run a straight edge along the inner flange starting at or below the first wrap of cable and moving to the outside of the flange in order to ‘feel’ for any obscured protrusions or hazards not observed through visual inspection. At the time of installation it will be prudent for the installer to observe cable payoff from the reel to ensure that no obvious damage is occurring from sources that may have been overlooked during initial inspection. The strength of the reel in this position is maximum and it will support the gross weight of cable and reel. In addition, reels can be lifted by cranes or fork lift equipment in an efficient manner. Reels should not be stored on their sides. This causes damage to the reels as a result of the side lopping, as well as up-righting, loosening of the cable winding and, in many cases, cable damage when the fork truck forks are slipped between the cable and the flange to upright the reel for use. All reels shipped from our facilities are clearly marked with the admonition “DO NOT LAY FLAT”. On receipt, cable protective covering should be inspected for evidence of damage during transit. When transit damage is suspected, the shipment should either be refused or at a minimum, a notation of the damage should be noted on the carrier’s if evidence of damage is found. Unloading should be accomplished so that equipment used does not contact the cable surface, and in the case of protective wrap, that the equipment does not contact the protective wrap. If unloading is accomplished by crane, either a cradle supporting the reel flanges or a shaft through the arbor hole, along with a spreader bar should be used. If a fork lift is utilized, the forks must lift the reel at 90 degrees to the flanges and must be long enough to make complete lifting contact with both flanges. Under no circumstances should the forks contact the cable surface or protective wraps. If an inclined ramp is used for unloading, the ramp must be wide enough for full contact by both flanges and stopping of the reels at the bottom of the ramp shall be accomplished without contact to the surface of the cable or its protective reel wrap. Under no circumstances should reels be dropped from the delivering vehicle to the ground. Reels should be stored on a hard surface so that flanges do not sink into the earth and allow the weight of the reel and cable to rest on the cable surface. Keep in mind that the life expectancy of a wooden reel that is stored outside in the Gulf Coast is only about 12 months. If you are required to store the cable reels for longer periods of time than this, we recommend using additional protection like tarps to protect the reels from direct exposure to rain. Reels should not be stored in an area where construction equipment, falling or flying objects, or other materials will contact the cable. 1 OKON ITE C A B LES When a reel of cable is rolled from one point to another, care must be taken to see that there are no objects on the surface area which could contact or damage the cable surface or protective wrap. This is the reason for the designed rolling clearance. Cable should be stored in an area away from open fires or sources of high heat.
