1: SYSTEM RECOVERY – GENERAL
Follow these instructions if it becomes necessary to reinstall both Windows® and SONIX software on a SONIX system.
Caution: Before doing a system recovery, be sure to make backup files for license.key and dongle.txt in order to preserve
all SONIX licensing information –which will required during the reinstallation process.
If any problems are encountered during System Recovery, please contact Ultrasonix Technical Support.
Required Equipment
• USB Key (e.g., flash drive, thumb drive, etc) or equivalent removable storage device
• USB keyboard (optional PS/2 keyboard).
Note: A PS/2 keyboard can be plugged into the purple connector on the Connectivity Panel. Refer to Item 2 in Figure 3-2 or
3-3 in the Service Manual or Chapter 10 in the User Manual for details on the Connectivity Panel.
2: BACKUP LICENSE FILES
Note: Ensure that a USB or PS2 keyboard has been plugged into the correct connection.
To Backup License Files:
1.
Plug the USB keyboard into one of the USB ports on the front of the console.
2.
Power on the SONIX system. The power button is located on the left side of the console, to the left of
the touch screen.
Note: If it is not possible to boot the SONIX software, skip to Section 3: BIOS Setup. Otherwise,
continue to Step 3.
3.
Plug the USB key (removable disk) into one of the USB ports on the front of the console.
4.
Press the Windows START key on the USB or PS2 keyboard.
5.
Using the track ball and console SELECT button, go to Program Files > Accessories > Windows
Explorer.
6.
In the Folders list on the left, expand My Computer by clicking the plus (+) sign and select Local
Disk (D:).
7.
In the Name list on the right, using the Update key click on license.key.

8.
Then using the console SELECT button click on Send To > Removable Disk (F:).
Note: Repeat steps 7 and 8 if there are additional *.key files in the directory.
9.
Press the Windows START key on the USB or PS2 keyboard and select Run.
Note: Leave Windows Explorer running.
10. Type cmd and press ENTER.
11. At the command prompt, type cd \program files\ultrasonix\exam and press Enter.
Note: Be sure to include the space between the words "program" and "files" when typing in the
string.
12. At the command prompt, type cvliccon.
13. With the cursor in the Command Prompt screen, press the console UPDATE button and select Mark.
14. Highlight only the serial number in the Registered Key field.
Note: To highlight the required text, use the trackball to place the cursor over the first character. Press
and hold the console SELECT button while using the trackball to drag the cursor along. Once all
required text has been selected, release the console SELECT button.

15. Press the console UPDATE button (this will copy the highlighted area to the clipboard).
16. Type exit and press ENTER to exit the Command Prompt window.
17. Windows Explorer should still be open. In the Folders list on the left, expand My Computer by
clicking the plus (+) sign and choose Removable Disk (F:).
18. Place the cursor on the right side of the window, click the console UPDATE button and select New >
Text Document.
19. The file name will be in gray. To rename, start typing dongle.txt and press Enter.
20. Open dongle.txt by using the console SELECT button to double click on it.
21. Press the console UPDATE button within the area of the white box to bring up the menu.
22. Select Paste.
23. From the menu, select File > Save.
24. Close the Notepad window by clicking on the "X" in the top right corner.
25. Close Windows Explorer by clicking on the "X" in the top right corner.
26. Press the console power button once to shut down the system.
Note: If Hibernation has been enabled, press and hold the power switch until the system shuts down.

3: BIOS SETUP CONFIRMATION (SXMOD1.1 AND LOWER)
Note: Ensure that a USB or PS2 keyboard has been plugged into the correct connection. The BIOS settings should not
have changed but it is a good idea to confirm the settings are as per factory.
To Confirm the BIOS is setup correctly:
1.
Using the console POWER button, turn on the SONIX system.
2.
Immediately begin pressing the keyboard DELETE button – and keep pressing it until American
Megatrends Bios Setup Utility is presented. Within a few seconds the image displayed will match
the one below.
Note: A list of keys will be displayed on the right hand side of the screen. Use these keys to navigate
through the BIOS Setup Utility.
3.
Verify that the BIOS setup options match the settings shown on the images in this section. If any do
not, edit them until they do.
4.
Under the Main options screen, use the arrow keys on the USB keyboard to navigate through the
BIOS options and ensure that following settings are configured properly:
• System Time: set to the current time
• System Date: set to the current date
• Legacy Diskette A: set to Disabled.
5.
Navigate to the Advanced options screen and enter the Chipset sub screen.
6.
Under the Chipset sub screen, ensure the Internal Graphic Mode is set to Disable.
7.
Return to the Advanced options screen by pressing ESC on the USB or PS2 keyboard.
8.
Enter the USB Configuration sub screen.
9.
Under the USB Configuration sub screen check the following:
• USB Function: set to Enable.
• Legacy USB Support: set to Enabled.
• USB 2.0 Controller: set to Enable.
• USB 2.0 Controller Mode: set to FullSpeed.
10. Return to the Advanced options screen by pressing ESC on the USB or PS2 keyboard.
11. Navigate to the Boot options screen enter the Boot Settings Configuration sub screen.

12. Under the Boot Settings Configuration sub screen check the following:
• Full Screen Logo: set this field to Enabled
• Bootup Num-Lock: set this field to Off.
13. Return to the Boot options screen by pressing ESC on the USB or PS2 keyboard.
14. Enter the Boot Device Priority sub screen.
15. Under the Boot Device Priority sub screen ensure that the DVD-RAM device is set as the 1st Boot Device.
16. Return to the Boot options screen by pressing ESC on the USB or PS2 keyboard.
17. Navigate to the Exit screen.
18. Select Exit & Save Changes.
19. Insert the SONIX recovery CD into the DVD drive of the console.
20. Save the changes by selecting OK. The system will restart and Windows will automatically begin the
installation process.

4: BIOS SETUP CONFIRMATION (SXMOD1.2 AND HIGHER)
Note: Ensure that a USB or PS2 keyboard has been plugged into the correct connection. The BIOS settings should not
have changed but it is a good idea to confirm the settings are as per factory.
To Confirm the BIOS is setup correctly:
1.
Using the console power button, turn on the SONIX system.
2.
Immediately begin pressing the keyboard DELETE button – and keep pressing it until Bios Setup
Utility (i.e. American Megatrends) is presented. Within a few seconds the image displayed will
match the one below.

navigate through the CMOS (BIOS) Setup Utility.

Features then press ENTER.

Configure the following settings:
• System Time: set to the current time
• System Date: set to the current date
• Floppy A: set to Disabled.

Press ESC to return to the CMOS Setup Utility menu options.
7.
Use the arrow keys on the USB keyboard to navigate to Advanced BIOS Features then press
ENTER.
8.
Ensure the Quick Boot option is set to Enabled.
9.
Scroll down to Boot Sequence and press ENTER.

10. Select 1st Boot Device and press ENTER to access the sub-menu.
11. Scroll down to USB:MATSHITA DVD-RAM and press ENTER to select the DVD-RAM as the first boot
device.
12. Select 2nd Boot Device and press ENTER to access the sub-menu.
13. Scroll up to SATA:PM-ST380815A (the numbers may not match) and press ENTER to select the hard
drive as the second boot device.
14. Press ESC twice to return to the CMOS Setup Utility menu.
15. Use the arrow keys on the USB keyboard to navigate to Advanced Chipset Features then press
ENTER.
16. Select Internal Graphics Mode select and press ENTER to access the sub-menu.
17. Scroll up to Disable and press ENTER.
18. Press ESC to return to the CMOS Setup Utility menu.
19. Use the arrow keys on the USB keyboard to navigate to Integrated Peripherals then press ENTER.

20. Scroll down to USB 2.0 Controller then press ENTER to bring up the sub-menu.
21. Scroll up to Full Speed then press ENTER.
22. Scroll down to I/O Devices Configuration then press ENTER to bring up the sub-menu.
23. Scroll down to Parallel Port then press ENTER to bring up the sub-menu.
24. Scroll down to 378 then press ENTER.
25. Scroll down to Parallel Port Mode then press ENTER to bring up the sub-menu.
26. Scroll down to ECP then press ENTER.
27. Scroll down to ECP DMA then press ENTER to bring up the sub-menu.
28. Scroll down to DMA 3 then press ENTER.
29. Scroll down to Parallel Port IRQ then press ENTER to bring up the sub-menu.
30. Scroll down to IRQ7 then press ENTER.
31. Press ESC twice to return to the CMOS Setup Utility menu.

32. Before exiting and saving the changes, insert the SONIX Recovery CD into the console DVD drive.
33. Navigate to the Save & Exit Setup and press ENTER.
34. Select OK and press ENTER.
35. Upon boot-up, Press any key will be displayed. Press any key on the keyboard to continue.

5: SYSTEM RECOVERY PROCEDURE
Note: Ensure that a USB or PS2 keyboard has been plugged into the correct connection.
To Run the System Recovery Procedure:
1.
After completing the applicable BIOS section (3: BIOS Setup Confirmation (SXmod1.1 and Lower) or
Error! Reference source not found. Error! Reference source not found.) Press any key to boot
from CD… should be displayed.
Note: If this instruction is not displayed, and "any key" was not pressed, reboot the machine to view
the Press any key to boot from CD… screen. Follow the onscreen instructions and press any
key to continue.
2.
Follow the directions and press any key on the keyboard. The setup procedure will take several
minutes to copy system files, finishing with the screen below.
3.
Select C: Partition1 [NTFS], and press ENTER to accept the existing size.
Caution: Ultrasonix does not recommend changing the partition size. Please contact Ultrasonix
Technical Support if you have any questions about this. Normally, the partition size is 20481 MB.
Additionally, take care to not delete the D: partition, unless specifically authorized by Ultrasonix
Technical Support.
4.
Select Format the partition using the NTFS file system (Quick) and press ENTER.
5.
Press F to format the partition.

6.
Setup will format the partition and copy files. The installation will start automatically.
Note: It will take approximately 10 to 15 minutes before the following screen is presented.
7.
Enter the Windows Product Key and click Next. Files will continue to be copied onto the hard drive
Note: The product key is located on the modulo and can be accessed by opening the cover to the
System Case Connectivity Panel (under the console).

When the Format Storage Drive message box is presented, select No. If it isn't presented, simply
continue to the next step.
Caution: Do not select Yes unless specifically authorized by Ultrasonix Technical Support as this will
erase the patient data.
9.
For .NET Messenger Service, enter your SONIX Serial Number as the e-mail address login (e.g., for
the
Serial
Number:

10. Check Sign me in automatically, enter the Password (ultrasonix).
11. If the SONIX is not connected to the Internet, click on the OK button. Otherwise click on the Cancel

6: CONFIGURING SYSTEM SETTINGS
Note: Ensure that a USB or PS2 keyboard has been plugged into the correct connection.
To Configure the System Settings:
1.
Press the Windows START key on the USB or PS2 keyboard.
2.
Using the track ball and SELECT key, go to Settings > Control Panel > Display.
3.
In the Display Properties window, click the Advanced button.
4.
Select the GeForce tab.
5.
Select Control Panel User Interface.> Classic nVidia Control Panel. > Apply.

6.
Click the Desktop Management item and click Enable button.
7.
Open the Desktop Management item and select Profiles > ultrasonix > Load….
8.
When the Load Profile window appears, click the Load button.
9.
The screen will flicker for several seconds. When complete, a Control Panel Exit Required…
message box will appear. Select OK.
10. Click the OK button on the message box that appears.
11. In the Display Properties window, click the Advanced button.

13. Select nView Display Settings from the list.

16. Go back to the previous menu (Select TV format) and click Device Adjustments….

31. Select the Monitor tab and click Restore Factory > OK.
32. Select the VCR/Photo tab, check Enable Video Out, then click OK.
33. Click OK again to exit Peripherals.
34. Press the console MENU button to exit all SONIX menus.
35. Using the USB keyboard, press the Windows START key.
36. Click on Settings > Control Panel > Sounds and Audio Devices.
37. In the Volume tab under Device Volume, click Advanced > Option > Properties.
38. Under Show the following volume control box, make sure that Rear Pink IN is selected.
Note: SONIX systems with SXMOD1.1 and below will not have a Rear Pink IN.
39. Click OK button.
40. Under Volume Control Window, set all volume control to Maximum.
41. Under Rear Pink IN, click on the Mute box.

7: ACTIVATING/UPDATING WINDOWS
Note: Ensure that a USB or PS2 keyboard has been plugged into the correct connection.
To Activate Windows over the Internet:
1.
While in the SONIX main echo screen, press the Windows START key on the USB or PS2 keyboard.
2.
Select Activate Windows.
3.
Select Yes, let’s activate Windows over the Internet now > Next.
4.
Select No, I don’t want to register now, let’s just activate Windows > Next.
5.
When the system prompts You have successfully activated your copy of Windows, click OK.
6.
Press the Windows START key.
7.
If Windows Update is available, select it and follow the instructions to update Windows.
Caution: If prompted, do not enable automatic updates.
To Activate Windows Via the Telephone:
1.
Follow Steps 1 and 2, above.
2.
Select Yes, I want to telephone a Customer Service Representative to activate Windows then
follow the instructions presented onscreen.

8: RELOADING LICENSES
Note: Ensure that a USB or PS2 keyboard has been plugged into the correct connection.
To Reload Licenses:
1.
Press MENU > Admin… > Licensing.
2.
Under Retrieve Licenses, click on Local Drive….
3.
From the Look-in drop down menu, select D:.
4.
Select license.key > Open.
5.
Verify that the correct Options are set to Active in the Licensing dialog.
Note: If license.key is not available from D:, please load it from the back-up that you created before
beginning the System Recovery procedure.

In the Licensing dialog, under Options, select MRU Imaging.
7.
Under Retrieve Licenses, click on Local Drive….
8.
From the Look-in drop down menu, select D:.
9.
Change Files of type: to All Files (*.*).
Note: If dongle.txt is not there, please load it from the USB drive (removable drive). Check to make
sure that MRU Imaging is Active.
10. Select dongle.txt > Open.
Note: If dongle.txt is not available, please load it from the back-up that you created and saved on the
USB key.
11. Check to ensure that MRU Imaging Status is Active.
Note: The Licensing dialog may need to be closed and reopened to properly update the Status
settings.
12. System Recovery is now complete.
