Creating a Good Presentation
Help
A harsh critique of online education is that students do not speak the
words of their new knowledge. While writing is very important to
document scholarly research, being able to talk about topics is crucial
for professional success. The purpose of the presentations is to get
comfortable with the process, to practice giving presentations, and to
share knowledge. While doing the research and preparing for a
presentation is learning, higher-order learning is in the ‘quality control’
activities, where you and your peers learn from each other's
presentations and comment about the most important ‘takeaway.’

Slide content should be clear, concise, and uncluttered. Add
succinct details (i.e., bullet points or informative yet short sentences,
etc.).
Break up the presentation details using tables and graphs
when/where applicable. Often, tables and graphs are space savers,
holding more details on a slide in comparison to having unnecessary
lengthy paragraphs or bullet points that are not as informative.
Your selection of the words on each slide is important because
your goal is to address each question thoroughly. As you select
the words you place on your slides, consider the following:
Can the viewer fast forward to a random section of your
presentation and understand the message you are conveying for a
particular slide?
If the volume was lost during your presentation, could your slides
stand alone and tell your intended story without the purpose or
objective being lost?
If the words on a slide suddenly disappeared, leaving a table or
graph in view, could the details on the table or graph be easily
understood?
Use the sandwich technique. Verbally address each question with a
brief introduction, provide 1 or 2 sentences of purpose, and close with

a 1 or 2 sentence conclusion. The ingredients of
the sandwich technique are the details between the introduction and
the conclusion. The key is offering your slide details in a variety of
formats (i.e., bullet points, short yet informative sentences, graphics
such as tables or graphs, etc.). As you present your slide content, ask
yourself the following:
What do I want my presentation audience to take away from my
responses?
Are there applicable referenced links to share with my audience?
Why does “this” particular bit of information matter?
It is important your presentation has good audio.
Your voice should be clear with a good tone.
Use a good microphone. Most computers and tablets have very
good microphones already built into the device. Be certain to
understand how to use the built-in microphone (i.e., eliminate
echoes or background noise).
Use inflection when speaking at key points you wish to emphasize.
