Course Final Report: Contemporary Civil Literacy

Course Description: This course provided students with a foundational understanding of
key aspects of contemporary civil life, encompassing civic engagement, environmental
responsibility, and community safety. The curriculum integrated theoretical knowledge
with practical experiences, fostering critical thinking and active participation in
community life.
Teaching Record and Assessment:
The course utilized a diverse range of teaching methods, including lectures,
discussions, field trips, and hands-on activities. The following topics were covered:
Orientation and Course Introduction: Students were introduced to the course
structure, expectations, assessment criteria, rules and regulations for example regular
attendance was required week in and week out, participation in course activities and
assignments was required by the teacher and on time attendance that is coming late for
lecture activities and lecture was discouraged by the teacher.
School Rules and Regulations: In this topic, we got to know, and the teacher gave us
a clear and detailed explanation of the school rules, responsibilities of various
stakeholders within the school community and the regulations governing student
conduct and behavior.
The teacher also explained to us as international students, our do’s and don'ts i.e. what
we are not allowed to do and participate in as international students in this school.
He further explained the implications if one was caught in the wrong which would come
after clear warning and he/she fails to abide and continues with the act.
All the above was based on and in accordance with the internation student hand book
offered by the school.
City Overview: This topic introduced to the city of Dalian with its rich history. Since we
are international students, this was really beneficial to us as we got to know valuable
knowledge about Dalian City, people and a brief history of the city. A number of
students paid a visit to Dalian Urban Planning Exhibition Center.
Environmentally Friendly Beach Cleaning: This practical session involved hands-on
participation in a beach cleanup, emphasizing environmentally responsible practices.
Assessment was based on participation and a short reflection paper on the experience.
Fire Station Visit & Fire Fighting Facilities: A field trip to a local fire station near the
University provided insights into fire safety procedures and the role of firefighters in the
community. This was done by some students and like me who got caught up, we were
tasked to check out the fire safety equipments inside the school.
Environmental Report 1: Before this report we carried out an environment activity
around the campus where we cleaned up some of the pollutants like polyethene bags
and plastics where are environmentally bad for our school. The report was based on
that, our observations and what we think should be done to keep our environment
clean.

Environmental Report 2: Building on the previous report, the teacher tasked us to
prepare a brief presentation on the topic ‘Environmental challenges in my country and
the solutions in my eyes’. This was presented in class by every.
Fire Drill: A fire drill was carried out around the student dorm and we participated. We
were taught how to use the different fire safety equipments around the dormitory like the
fire extinguishers.
University History: For this we made a visit to the University Museum where we got to
known the history of the school. This included the founding year and the founders, first
students in school and also the different stakeholders that participated in the setting up
of the University.
We also got to known the significance of the University to the development of the
Peoples Republic of China.
Mental Health Education and Practice: This module focused on understanding mental
health issues, promoting well-being, and accessing support services. We paid a visit to
the newly opened Self-Help Psychological Training center and got introduced to some
of the facilities use in mitigating mental health issues.
Overall Course Evaluation:
The course successfully integrated theoretical learning with practical experiences which
provided us with a comprehensive understanding of contemporary civil life. Student
engagement was consistently high, demonstrating a keen interest in the topics covered.
Gains from the course.
Problem solving skills and critical thinking enhancement. These different assignments
really encouraged me to do more critical thinking.
Cooperation skills. This is through the different group works I carried out during the
course.
First aid skills. This was during the fire drills hence I am now able to provide a few first
aid services in case of an emergency for example fire outbreak
Presentation improvement. My presentation skills generally improved due to class
presentations that were carried out.
Future improvements.
Future improvements can be made around the class time, for instance I was unable to
participate in some of the activities due to time confliction with my other classes.
Other improvements can be made around increasing topics covered for example
community-based engagement.
