Critique Paper
● What is the Presenting Condition?
- The client (Gloria) presented in this case was experiencing problems regarding finding a romantic
partner because she claims to not be able to present the proper behavior towards them whenever
she actually gets to meet one. Gloria also mentions that she does not want this phenomenon to
persist because she does not want to meet a man that does not meet her standards.
● How did Ellis implement the core principles of Rational Emotive Behavioral Therapy?
- Albert Ellis made sure that the client did not focus on the events or experiences themselves, but
rather what they think about or their views and opinions about the said experiences. This is the
core principle or Rational Emotive Behavioral Therapy as it focuses mainly on one’s beliefs and
thinking and tries to correct those irrational thoughts that are affecting the client.
● Give two (2) exercises/therapeutic techniques & procedures implemented in the session.
- Albert Ellis utilized cognitive restructuring to help Gloria identify and modify her irrational
beliefs, most notably, her catastrophizing about not finding the man of his dreams and would settle
for someone less because of her irrational belief of being undeserving of the men he likes. At the
end of the session, Albert Ellis also gave the client a homework assignment wherein he told Gloria
to use the things she learned about through the session and apply these learnings whenever she is
in a situation where she finds herself with the man of her interest.
● Compare and contrast the therapy process of Perls & Ellis
- Contrary to Fritz Perls approach in Gestalt Therapy, Gloria felt more supported by Albert Ellis
during the course of the therapy session. It is also more apparent that in Rational Emotive
Behavioral Therapy, the therapist themselves are able to give advice or their own opinions to their
clients which was something not that present in the Gestalt approach, which focused mainly on
leading the client to the answer they are looking for.
