7 Lesser-Known Sunnahs to Practice During Your Umrah
Journey
Umrah, the lesser Islamic pilgrimage to the sacred city of Makkah,
is a highly spiritual journey that purifies the heart and leads the believer closer to Allah
(SWT). Though the compulsory acts of Umrah—Ihram, Tawaf, Sa'i, and Halq/Taqsir—
are famous, there are some lesser-documented Sunnahs that will really make a big
difference to your spiritual journey.
Performing these Sunnahs not only reap additional reward (ajr) but
also further your attachment to the Prophet Muhammad ﷺand the sacred environment of
the Haramain.
Here at Tawheed Umrah, our specially crafted Umrah
packages seek to bring not only comfort and convenience but also avenues for
spiritual growth. Let us discover 7 lesser-known Sunnahs you may adopt on your
Umrah journey.
1. Entering Makkah with Humility and Praise
While most people think about the thrill of entering Makkah, the Sunnah is
to approach the holy city in humility, thankfulness, and praise for Allah. The
Prophet would enter Makkah bowing his head, humbly glorifying Allah.
2. Stopping to Look at the Kaaba Upon Entry
One lovely Sunnah that is not well-known is to stop for a moment and look at the Kaaba
with amazement and respect upon first seeing it. Scholars say that it is mustahabb to make
dua during this time because it is one occasion when duas are most probably accepted.
Tip: Write down your most sincere duas beforehand. This time will be emotional, and
you might forget what you wanted to ask.
3. Using Perfume Prior to Ihram (for Men)
One very commonly neglected Sunnah is that men should apply perfume that is
not alcoholic prior to entering into Ihram (prior to the niyyah). After entering into the state
of Ihram, perfume becomes halal.
Prophet.: "I saw the Messenger of Allah with iṭr (perfume) on his head while in the state of
Ihram."
(Bukhari)
Note: Women are not allowed to apply perfume during Umrah.
4. Offering Tahiyyat al-Masjid (2 Rakat) When Entering the Haram
Prior to commencing Tawaf, numerous individuals bypass a lovely Sunnah: performing two
rak'ahs of Tahiyyat al-Masjid, greeting the mosque. Although Tawaf
is legally permissible as an alternative for this prayer at Masjid alHaram, it is still advised by scholars to perform two rak'ahs if possible and time permits.
This prayer is a humble setting and is performed as an act of gratitude towards Allah
for safe transportation to His house.
5. Drinking Zamzam with Intention and Facing the Qiblah
Zamzam water is not only for drinking—it's a source of healing and blessings. One forgotten
Sunnah is to face the Qiblah, stop, and make dua before drinking Zamzam.
Prophet said: "The water of Zamzam is for whatever it is drunk for."
(Ibn Majah)
Tip: Make a specific, sincere dua before drinking, whether for health, guidance, or
forgiveness.
6. Dhikr During Sa'i Between Safa and Marwah
Whereas the majority of pilgrims walk quietly between Safa and Marwah, the Sunnah is
to say dhikr, duas, and to ponder over the travail of Hajar (RA). At the green lights
(referred to as Milayn al-Akhdarayn), men are urged to walk quickly, as was practiced by the
Prophet.
"Indeed, Safa and Marwah are among the symbols of Allah."
(Surah Al-Baqarah 2:158)
Recite the famous dua at Safa and Marwah:
"Inna aṣ-Ṣafa wal-Marwah min shaʿā'irillāh…"
7. Making Dua Upon Finishing Umrah
It is common for most people to finish Umrah and only think of leaving the mosque—but
this is a precious moment. The Sunnah is to make comprehensive dua
after finishing the last Halq or Taqsir because it is a time of acceptability.
You have just completed a sacred Islamic pilgrimage; your heart is pure, your sins are
forgiven—what better time to raise your hands and ask Allah for your needs, your family’s
