1. API 682 4th – Category 2 & 3
Category 2 & 3 seals are described in the API 682 4th edition as
follows :
Category 2 & 3 seals are typically intended for use in pump seal
chambers meeting the dimensional requirements of API 610 / ISO
13709 (Table 7, Figure 26).
Shall be designed for temperatures from -40 °C to 400 °C (-40°F
to 750°F and an gauge pressures up to 40 bar (600 PSI).
Seals/seal series have to be tested through Seal Qualification
Tests (SQTs).
Shall be designed for non-hydrocarbon, hydrocarbon and flashing
hydrocarbon applications.

2. Design requirements of API 682 4th
Paragraph 6.1.2.6 (Table 1) of the API 682 4th edition which describes minimal clerances of
the mechanical seal design has been revised.
The requirements will be explained on the following pages.
Each deviation has to be agreed and confirmed by the customer and will be shown on the GA
drawing.

Radial thickness of shaft sleeve
• Minimal radial thickness of sleeves Ts: 2.5 mm (0.10”)
• Minimal radial thickness Th1 of sleeve in the area of component drive set screws:
2.5 mm (0.10”) for shaft < 57 mm
3.8 mm (0.15”) for shaft 57 to 80 mm
5.0 mm (0.20”) for shaft > 80 mm

Minimal radial clearance C1 between rotating and stationary components: 3 mm (0.12“)
Minimal radial clearance C2 in the area of the pumping ring:
0.5 mm (0.020“) for shaft ≤ 60 mm
