1. Define all terms for Chapter 5 (20 total) and Chapter 6 (19 total). You may work with a partner on the
vocabulary and turn in one copy for both of you.
Part B: Individual work
1. Explain the cultural influences that contributed to the origin of the English language. Who were the
groups? When/Where did they come from? What types of diffusion occurred?
2. How was English diffused around the world? What types of diffusion occurred?
3. What is a lingua franca? Why is English considered the global lingua franca? Provide examples of
lingua francas other than English.
4. How are lingua francas similar & different than pidgin languages? Creolized languages?
5. Summarize the basic distribution of the 4 major branches of the Indo-European language family
(Germanic, Romance, Balto-Slavic & Indo-Iranian) & identify 2-3 languages of each branch.
6. Describe the two theories for the early diffusion of the Proto-Indo-European language.
7. What is a dialect? How do dialects develop within languages? Provide examples of English dialects.
8. Provide 2 at least examples of languages currently experiencing revival. Describe methods used to
promote/revive an endangered language.
9. What is an ideographic writing system? Provide 2 examples of languages that use an ideographic
writing system.
10. Describe differences between universalizing and ethnic religions (as many as you can think of).
Provide examples of each.
11. Describe the difference between a religion with a strict hierarchy and a religion with local autonomy.
Provide examples of each.
12. What is the difference between places of worship and holy places or holy sites?
13. List 2 holy sites for the following religions: Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Islam, & Judaism.
14. In what ways can religion impact the cultural landscape of a place? Explain each.
15. Describe the origin, diffusion & current distribution of each of the following religions: Buddhism,

16. Identify one current religious conflict in the world today. What are its causes? What are the political
and/or geographic consequences of the conflict?
