General_Description_1-2MW-xxHz_WindSpeedLimitations_EN_r02.docx x GE Power & Water – Original Instructions – Assembly & Maintenance Wind Speed Limitations 1 General 1.1 Purpose This document defines the wind speed limits for application of the high speed shaft rotor lock (HSSRL) and the Low Speed Shaft Rotor Lock (LSSRL) during assembly, erection, and maintenance of all 1&2MW Platform wind turbines. Detailed loads analysis is used to define the limit wind speed based on the design capability of the rotor locks and the atmospheric conditions during the operations, specifically the air density. Air applies loads on the turbine system, and the locks must overcome those forces to ensure safe operations. Those forces are a function of the wind speed and the air density. Air density is, in turn, a function of the elevation and temperature. The results of the loads analysis are, therefore, maximum allowable ten minute average wind speeds as a function of the atmospheric conditions (density or temperature) experienced by the turbine. Two methods are presented for determining the maximum allowable wind speed for application of the locks. Section 2 provides a method only dependent on the air temperature. This method is applicable to 1.x turbines. Section 3 provides a method that includes both altitude and temperature to calculate the density and then provides a look-up table for the allowable wind speed as a function of density. This method is only available for the 2.x-107 and 2.x-116 wind turbines. These turbines also include an HMI report of the calculated allowable value for lock application based on current atmospheric conditions. 1.2 Restrictions and Warnings Specifications/requirements may change at any time, check for updates prior to performing operations. Due to concerns about human exposure to cold, no maintenance operations are permitted below -31 C (-24 F). Hub entry permitted up to either the limit wind speed of the HSSRL, or 15 m/s, whichever is lower. In accordance with general safety guidelines: 1. Work outside the nacelle permitted up to 15 m/s. 2. Work inside the turbine is permitted to 20 m/s. Blade entry is permitted to the same wind speed as hub entry. The HSSRL and LSSRL should not be engaged at the same time. The HSSRL is the preferred lock for assembly and maintenance activities. The HSSRL is used for all assembly activities unless it is unusable due to damage. The LSSRL should be used only for maintenance activities during-which the HSSRL is mechanically unavailable. Examples are maintenance to the gearbox, replacement of the gearbox, repair of damage to the HSSRL. CONFIDENTIAL - Proprietary Information. Air temperature should be measured outside the nacelle. The limits reported in Table 1 assume any yaw position relative to the wind, any rotor position, and at least 2 blades pitched to feather (>89 degrees) or flag (-90 degrees). Pitching more than 1 blade away from feather or flag with the high speed rotor lock engaged is not permitted. These limits allow for higher maximum wind speeds at high altitude as well as high temperature. When the turbine HMI is available, it will present the maximum limit wind speed for both the HSSRL and the LSSRL based on calculated air density as a function of altitude and air temperature. 3.1 Calculation of Air Density Air density is calculated by the turbine HMI using equation (3.1). −9.8∗𝐴𝑙𝑡𝑖𝑡𝑢𝑑𝑒(𝑚𝑒𝑡𝑒𝑟𝑠) 101325 𝐷𝑒𝑛𝑠𝑖𝑡𝑦(𝑘𝑔/𝑚3 ) = 287.05∗(𝑇𝑒𝑚𝑝𝑒𝑟𝑎𝑡𝑢𝑟𝑒(𝐶)+273) ∗ 𝑒 287.05∗(𝑇𝑒𝑚𝑝𝑒𝑟𝑎𝑡𝑢𝑟𝑒(𝐶)+273) eq (3.1) Table 2 provides tabulated values of density as a function of altitude and temperature, for reference.
