TESTING METHODOLOGY
Proof Load Testing of Post-Installed Anchors
Service Request
On-site tests of fasteners do not a) evaluate suitability or adequacy of the anchor design; b) verify
proper installation or compliance with approval requirements; c) establish ultimate capacity of tested
anchors (unless tested to failure); or d) address performance of untested anchors.
Testing is performed as a service by HILTI in support of its products and is intended solely to provide
information on the general suitability of the base material and/or assist in identification of gross
installation errors of tested fasteners – it does not imply any agreement in or endorsement of the
suitability of propriety of the test or the application and is not intended for use in satisfying any project
or regulatory requirements for on-site inspection.
Method Statement
Proof Test based on British Standard (BS) 8539 Annex B.3 (Test to validate Quality) will be carried out
on the installed anchors to show that they have been installed correctly and are not intended to prove
suitability. The test is intended to demonstrate that anchors to be used in service have a modest safety
margin without risking their integrity.

Hilti HIT-RE500 V3 + HAS/HAS-U 5.8 M16
1.50 x characteristic value of action load: FP = 1.5 x Sk
(νP,Test = 1.50)
FP = 1.5 x 23.833 kN
FP = 35.7495 kN
The sample size should be 2.5% of the total number
of anchors installed (1 in 40 anchors), with a minimum
three tests
Validate Quality (i.e., Installation Quality)
Anchors satisfy the test if the proof load is held without
movement, damage or deformation occurring to either anchor
or base material for ten (10) seconds
The proof test load, Np, should normally be the characteristic action, NSk, multiplied by νP,test, as shown
in equation (B.11):
Np =NSk · νP,test (B.11)
where νP,test is 1.5 when 2.5% of anchors are tested and 1.25 when 5% are tested. The proof test load
factor, νP,test, should never exceed 1.5.If, in any discrete area, one failure is encountered, then the reason
for failure should be investigated, the number of anchors tested in that discrete area should be doubled
to 5% (or 10% depending on level of proof load) and at least 6.If more than one anchor fails then 100%
of the anchors should be tested, the reasons for failure determined and the specification reconsidered.

Reasons for failure should be communicated to those responsible for the installation, to avoid further
failures on future installations.
Execution of On-Site Tests
Test results only indicate the tested anchor(s) held the stated proof load for the time applied,
respectively. The location and number of tests, loading parameters and fasteners will be done as
determined by customer and set out in this Service Request.
Customer confirms that the testing conditions set out in this Service Request are correct. Hilti does not
assess whether these test conditions are suitable for evaluation. The customer or a customer
representative is required to participate, witness, and supervise the execution of the tests.
Due to the possible variability of the base material and the various loading situations, the test results
may not be representative of the entire construction project. On-site tests may damage the structure –
Hilti is not responsible for the damage, or its restoration.
For HILTI to be able to carry-out onsite-tests of fasteners, Customers must ensure that:
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
Installation of fastener(s) shall occur prior to HILTI’s arrival for field testing (site training
concerning the installation of anchors can be provided if required).
For adhesive/epoxy anchor installations, fastener(s) must have properly cured prior HILTI’s
arrival for field testing (see the packaging/Technical literature for the applicable time of curing
at the appropriate temperature.
Selection of test locations and anchorages to be tested shall be at Customer’s sole discretion
and responsibility.
There must be at least one anchor diameter of clean thread standing out to attach the testing
equipment to it.
The area around the fasteners to be tested (at least 250 mm ᶲ circle) shall be unobstructed.
Safe access must be provided to enable the tests to be carried out including the provision of a
suitable working platform or scaffolding if required.
HILTI must be informed about any site-specific hazards applicable to site access and carrying
out the test.
Customer is responsible for repairing damaged areas and replacing/repairing any fastener(s)
that fail a test.
Required test load and any testing requirements have been specified by Engineer on Record.

Tester and Fastening Setup
The configuration of Hilti HIT-RE 500 V3 + HAS/HAS-U 5.8 M16 shall be set in accordance
with the requirements of Amsteel Structures Inc. for NSCR Project. The fixing layout should
also be in accordance with the configurations used in the calculation parameters (if any).
Installation of anchors should be in conformity with the procedures stated in the latest
Instructions for Use (IFU) manual.
The hydraulic jack shall be positioned/configured as shown below (Fig 1 – drawn not to scale)

Disclaimer: Testing Equipment may vary depending on the actual condition on site.
Considering that the anchor fastening assembly is set already, the steps in setting up tester are as
follows:
Installing Fixings & Test Apparatus Equipment
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
Place the bridge where the anchor is located.
Put the hydraulic jack on the anchor and place it on the top of the bridge.
Attach the hose of the manual pressure pump to the hydraulic jack.
Attach the Calibrated Pressure Gauge to the manual pressure pump.
Proof loads can now be applied
Load Application
In predetermined increments apply loading until the desired load is achieved. Record any
observation to the Testing & Verification Form.
Failure may occur on the concrete, hence if failure occurs prior to the desired load, record mode
of failure and any damages to the structure or the fixing (if applicable). In case of any failures in
the anchor system and/or concrete, Hilti will not be held liable to any damages from the structure
arising from the failure due to the requested testing.

Safety
All installation and testing operations must be carried out with due regard for the safety of the installer
and others.
When using a pulling frame, or cup, the fixing should be installed through an appropriately sized bush
and tightened to the manufacturer's recommended tightening torque. When testing in a weak base
material a reduced tightening torque may be necessary to prevent over stressing of the anchorage
before testing. Refer to the manufacturer for advice.
On vertical surfaces or under soffits all apparatus must be fixed to be secure, taking account of failure
of the fixing under test. Attach the fixing or pulling frame to the loading apparatus ensuring that the load
will be applied axially to the fixing.
It is the responsibility of all parties involved to take care to ensure the safety of all bystanders during the
application of loads especially when testing to failure. When using pulling rods in tension ensure no one
stands in line with the rod.
