Sportsmanship
The term, sportsmanship, can be defined as " positive behaviour towards other persons ". the term
is mainly used in any type of "game","contest" etc., however, is most commonly used in sporting
competitions. The lack of sportsmanship is generally frowned upon and often leads to penalties or
punishments. Sportsmanship, although a general term, can have certain rules depending on what you are
participating in.

How to show good sportsmanship.
All participants of a competition can show good sportsmanship by showing respect to every person
around them. This does not only include speaking. Disrespect can be shown through actions, gestures, etc.
An example of very bad sportsmanship, which is to be avoided, is attacking another person, which will lead
to severe consequences such as penalties or being kicked from the game.
Other ways in which good sportsmanship include:
being positive during the game. a negative attitude can affect other members of the team,
especially if actions which reflect of a negative attitude is shown. this includes: groaning,
complaining, stating that the team may lose, etc.
in some sports, shaking hands with members of the other team before and after the match reflect
of good sportsmanship. However, many sports may not require this . this is most common in
physical sports such as football, basketball among others.
avoiding stating negative critisisms of teammates. discouraging teammates can affect their
performance in the game and can affect them outside the game too. if enough negative critisism is
given to a teammate, he/she may quit the game entirely. Instead , encourage them by
complimenting their attempts or provide the correct aamount of constructive critisism in the right
time.
obey and respect the officials / the organisers of the game. Do not argue or complain if you are
called or told to withdraw.
never make any attempt to make members of the oposing team "feel bad" . This includes "teasing"
Generally, attempt to follow the rules of the game that you are playing. Although some rules may
have to be broken in certain situations, never attempt to cheat to play unfairly.
if another player has been injured, halt what you are doing and attempt to assist them. depending
on the severity of the injury, you may need to call emergeny services.
never act immature by complaining whenever you lose. Accept your losses.
likewise, if you win, do not attempt to make the other team "feel bad"
there may be other ways required to show good sportsmanship depending on the game you are playing.
Also, know that practicing good sportsmanship will lead to developing maturity.

What can lead to good sportsmanship?
Aside from being to to by a physical education instructor or by the game's organiser, good sportsmanship
can be developed due to certain other factors. Namely, the behaviours of famous players can heavily affect
sportsmanship in persons. if someone who idolises one of these players and this player demonstrates either
good or bad sportsmanship, then the person who idolises them may be infuenced by this. How the person
feels about the sport and also their general personality will affect their sportsmanship as well.

Benefits and costs of good and bad sportsmanship.
Showing good sportsmanship will maintain the enjoyability of the sport for all participants and participating
in a game in which good sportsmanship is demonstrated will result in increased self esteem. However the
consequences of bad sportsmanship include emotional suffering and the potential of quitting the game.
