COURSEWORK GROUP ASSESSMENT
Total 20 marks
Submit: Friday 3rd November 2023.
1. A current of 5 A is passed for 10 minutes through the molten MgI 2. Calculate the mass of product
that will be formed at the cathode (to two decimal places).
(5 marks)
(Relative atomic masses: Mg = 24; I = 127)
(1 Faraday = 96 500 C mol–1)
2. A current of 5 amperes is passed through the molten lead bromide for 5 minutes.
Calculate the mass of lead that would be deposited (to two decimal places).
(5 marks)
(RAM: Pb = 207; Faraday’s constant, F = 96 500 C mol–1)
3. Given that the mass of the chromium needed to plate a tenor pan is 0.52kg, calculate the length of
time (in seconds) that a current of 20.0A would have to flow through the electrolytic cell to plate
the pan. The electrolyte is chromium (III) sulphate solution.
(5 marks)
Use the following data in your calculation:
Relative Atomic Mass: Cr =52
Faraday= 96,000 coulombs.
4. A current of 5 amperes is passed for 2 hours during the period of the electrolysis of copper (II)
sulphate solution. Inert electrodes were used. Calculate EACH of the following:
(i) The quantity of electricity passed in coulombs
(2 marks)
(ii) The mass of copper deposited (to two decimal places)
(3 marks)
[Relative Atomic Mass of Cu = 64]
Faraday's constant= 96500 coulombs
