Welcome to MATA34, Fall 2024 - Calculus for Management.
This document outlines the academic and administrative policies of our
course. It is assumed that you read and understand this by Saturday
Sept 7, 2024.

Lecture Material Delivery: There are three in-person lecture sections of MATA34:
LEC 01 (Tuesday 3pm-4pm and Thursday 1pm-3pm, both in HW-216)
LEC 02 (Wednesday 1pm-2pm and Friday 1pm-3pm, both in IC-130)
LEC 03 (Monday 7pm-9pm in HL-B101) and (Wednesday 7pm - 8pm, in IC-130).
You should attend the lecture section you have been enrolled in. There are no recorded lectures
for MATA34.
Weeks: UTSC officially begins on Tuesday September 3, 2024. For MATA34, weeks start on
a Tuesday and end on the following Monday. Thus Week 1 is Tuesday Sept 3 - Monday Sept 9

(inclusive), Week 2 is Tuesday Sept 10 - Monday Sept 16 (inclusive), Week 3 is Tuesday Sept 17
- Monday Sept 23 (inclusive), etc.
UTSC Study/Reading Week is Monday Oct 28 - Saturday Nov 2 (inclusive). There are no lectures,
tutorials, or office hours that week.
Email Communication with Instructors: Please use your official UTORONTO email address
when emailing either instructor. Put our course code MATA34 in the subject line of your email
and include your names and your U of T student number.
Textbook: Introductory Mathematical Analysis for Business, Economics and the Life and Social
Sciences, 14th edition, by E. Haeussler, R. Paul and R. Wood. This book is in the UTSC Bookstore
and is easy to find on-line as an e-book or other formats. If you use the 13th edition instead of the
14th edition, you run the risk of some lecture material and assignment material being confusing to
you. This is because different text editions have different order of text material. Obtaining a used
14th edition or an on-line/e-book can save money and is likely to be a good option.
Grading Scheme:
Weekly Tutorial Quizzes
28% (4% each, your best 7 count)
Midterm Test
27% (Date/Time TBA)
Final Examination
45% (Date/Time TBA)
The weekly quizzes, the midterm test, and the final exam are in-person at UTSC. You should expect
that the midterm test is 2 hours and the final exam is 3 hours. Calculators are not allowed
on any assessment (i.e. not allowed on any quiz or the midterm test or final exam) in
MATA34
Requirements to Pass MATA34: There are two requirements that you must meet in order to
pass MATA34:
1. You must have a total final grade of at least 50% weighted (as above) over the weekly quizzes,
the midterm test, and the final exam.
2. You must obtain a score of at least 35/135 on the final exam (the final exam will be scored
out of 135).
Note carefully that both requirements 1 and 2 above must be met to pass MATA34. No one
requirement without the other is sufficient to pass our course. In particular, if your quizzes are
excellent and you midterm is too, but you score less that 35 on the final exam, then you will not
pass MATA34.
Days and times for midterm test and and the final exam will be posted at Quercus, announced in
lectures, and stated in some homework assignments papers.

Prerequisite:
Ontario Grade 12 Vectors and Calculus or equivalent. If you do not have this
prerequisite or an equivalent approved prerequisite, then you cannot take MATA34. If you do not
have this prerequisite, or equivalent, you may be removed from the course.
General Course Schedule and Overview:
Our course is specifically designed for Management students, but others may find it interesting too.
The topics covered are deemed to be useful for all Management programs. Our course has four
units:
[Unit 1] Differential calculus of one variable: Limits, derivatives, differentiation for about 5
weeks.
[Unit 2] Matrices and systems of equations for about 2 weeks.
[Unit 3] Differential calculus of functions of several variables for about 3 weeks.
[Unit 4] Integral calculus of one variable for about 2 weeks.

Homework Assignments:
Homework assignments will be posted at Quercus generally on a
week-to-week basis. These assignments contain practice problems from the textbook (14th edition)
and other problems, information about study sections from the text, a summary of terms (i.e.
vocabulary) and concepts to know, and usually some important notes or remarks about upcoming
events (i.e. a midterm test or final exam). Homework assignment problems are not to be
handed in for marking. You should work carefully on all homework problems. You
should not expect to see posted solutions for homework assignments.
Tutorials: It is your responsibility to have enrolled in a tutorial by Saturday Sept 7, 2024. All
tutorials are in-person at UTSC. Memorize your tutorial number: you will need this information
when submitting your midterm test (and you will be penalized if you do not know your tutorial
number). You are also assigned a TA (teaching assistant) for your tutorial number. You will be
introduced to your TA in your first tutorial. Your TA will be present in each of your tutorials.
They will let you know their name, they will administer the tutorial quizzes, they will supervise
your tutorial, they will demonstrate problem solving, and answer questions in your tutorial. It is
your responsibility to memorize your tutorial number and your TA name.
All tutorials are in-person at UTSC and begin in Week 2 (Tuesday Sept 10 - Monday Sept 16)
and will take place every week (except Reading/Study Week: Monday Oct 28 - Saturday Nov 2,
inclusive). There are no tutorials in MATA34 in Week 1 (Tuesday Sept 3 - Monday Sept 9).
Tutorial Quiz Details: Starting in Week 3 (Tuesday Sept 17 - Monday Sept 23), you will write
a quiz (based on recent lectures, textbook studying, and homework assignment material) at the
beginning of every tutorial. You will have about 20 minutes to write. You will supply your own

paper and writing tools. Calculators are NOT allowed in MATA34 for any quiz. All
quiz scores are out of 20. There is no quiz in Week 2 (your first tutorial).
Your TA will put the quiz questions on the chalkboard at the beginning of the tutorial. Your TA
will mark your quiz and return it in the following tutorial. All considerations and marking issues
about quizzes must be addressed in your tutorial directly with your TA. Instructors will not discuss
with you the marking of any quizzes, that is one job of your TA.
Quercus will only show your best 7 quiz scores (each valued at 4% of your overall MATA34 grade).
For quizzes numbers after 7, your TA will look at your previous 7 quiz scores and sequentially replace
any lower scores with subsequent higher scores (should there be any beyond quiz 7). For example,
suppose you have scores of 20, 20, 13, 17, 15, 18, 16 on your first 7 quizzes. If you write quiz 8
and get 19, then that 19 will replace the 13 you got on quiz 3. When the score for quiz 8 is entered
and Quercus updates, the you will see only see these scores: 20, 20, 19, 17, 15, 18, 16.
You should expect that 10 quizes will be given in total, but this could change (depending on
circumstances beyond the control of our course). Remember that only your best 7 quiz scores count
towards the 28% of your final grade in MATA34. In the exceptional circumstance that only 8 or 9
quizzes are given, your best 7 quizzes will still count.
Extra Help and Office Hours: Your two course instructors and all TAs will have office hours for
extra help in room TBA. During office hours you can ask about homework assignment questions,
you can ask other questions, and you can get general math help. A schedule of office hours will be
posted at Quercus soon (probably near the end of Week 1 or the beginning of Week 2). You should
expect that there will many hours of extra help each week.
Policy on missing a quiz:
There will likely be 10 tutorial quizzes and only your best 7 will
count. There are no make-up quizzes for any reason. There are no opportunities for any reason to
write a quiz on-line or anywhere other than your official tutorial. If you miss a quiz, then this is
unfortunate but there is no compensation. It is in your best interest to write as many quizzes as
possible.
If you write a quiz in a tutorial that is not your official tutorial, you will get 0 for that
quiz. This cannot be negotiated or altered by any TA.
Policy on missing the Midterm Test: If you miss the Midterm Test, you should let Professor
Grinnell know of this via email not more than 3 days (any days: Monday - Sunday) after the
midterm test has been written.
There will be one Make-Up Test planned for all students who miss the Midterm Test.
The date, time, and location of this will be announced by Professor Grinnell to all students who
are allowed the Make-up Test.
Your informing of Professor Grinnell that you missed the Midterm Test must be an email that
states:
• Your names
• Your UofT student number;

• Our course code: MATA34;
• A brief statement affirming that you did not write the Midterm Test.
Missing the Final Exam: This is a very serious matter and is therefore not addressed at courseadministrative/course coordinator level. UTSC policies and procedures about missing the final
exam are found in the 2024/2025 UTSC Calendar and at the UTSC Registrar’s web site.

Student Responsibilities: As a student in MATA34 it is assumed you have read and understood
this entire document by Saturday, Sept 7, 2024.
You also have the responsibilities in the list below. At no point after Saturday Sept 7, 2024 will
it be an acceptable excuse or reason that you have not read or not accepted these responsibilities or
contents of this entire document as justification for special consideration due to some troublesome
administrative issue or otherwise.
1. You have enrolled in a tutorial by Saturday Sept 7, 2024.
2. You have read, understood, and agree with the contents of this General Course Information
and Policy document and the Course Outline and Schedule document.
3. You keep a record of all of your quiz scores and the midterm test score.
4. If you miss the midterm Test (and you wish compensation), you are responsible for the
appropriate course of action as per the policy above.
5. You read and understand all postings to Quercus as they become available.
6. You understand and abide by the University of Toronto Code of Behavior and Code of Student
Conduct (see the UTSC 2024/2025 Calendar or the UTSC Registrar’s web site).
7. You agree to not distract other students or your instructor in lectures and tutorials by talking,
texting or doing other inappropriate things.
