Procedure
Use the Motor Development Observation Chart to record subjective observations while
watching children of different chronological ages perform a gross motor task.
Use your findings to answer the following questions as a group.
Motor Development Questions
1. Compare two children of different ages on your observed motor skill.
a. What were some major differences between the children? Make a chart or graphic
organizer to explain your answer.
b. Make a concluding statement about the development of this motor skill between the
ages you selected.
2. Choose a different child from question #1. What teaching points would you give the
child based on your observations? (ie. What would help them move to the next stage of
development with that skill?) Use some of your biomechanics knowledge in the answer.
3. Some students in a similar stage of development could have different skill proficiency.
a. Did you observe any children of the same age who had a discrepancy in their motor
skill? If so, what differences did you see? If not, why do you think you did not see any
differences?
b. Discuss how practice affects motor skills. Be sure to use the information discussed in
class.
