What is
ERGONOMICS
Ergonomics is the science of designing
spaces, products, and systems to fit
the people who use them.
It focuses on comfort, efficiency, and
safety to reduce strain or injury.
In interior design, it helps create userfriendly and functional living or working
environments.
BEDROOM
ERGONOMICS
Bed
Standard Height: 20–25 inches from floor to top of mattress (ideal
for easy access).
• Clearance Space: At least 24–30 inches on each side and foot
of the bed for free movement.
Desk
Height: 28–30 inches (comfortable for writing or computer use).
Chair Clearance: 18–20 inches under the desk.
Clearance Behind Chair: Minimum 30–36 inches for easy sitting
and standing.
Desk Depth: 24–30 inches (to keep monitor at eye level and avoid
strain).
Closet
Reach-in Closet Depth: Minimum 24 inches.
Clearance in front: At least 36 inches in front of closet doors
(sliding or hinged) for ease of access.
Hanging Rod Height: Around 66–72 inches from the floor.
Clearance from bed:
About 2–3 inches from the side of the bed for easy reach and
airflow.
LIVING ROOM ERGONOMICS
Sofa
Seat Height: 17–19 inches from floor.
Seat Depth: 20–24 inches for comfort.
Clearance in Front: 30–36 inches between sofa and coffee table or other furniture for easy
movement.
Back Height: 30–36 inches from the floor.
Coffee Table
Height: 16–18 inches (should be level with or slightly lower than sofa seat height).
Clearance from Sofa: 14–18 inches (comfortable reach without crowding).
Table Size: Typically 36–48 inches long, 18–24 inches wide (can vary).
TV Unit / Media Console
TV Viewing Distance: Around 1.5 to 2.5 times the diagonal size of the TV (e.g., 55" TV = 82"–137"
distance).
TV Height: The center of the screen should be at eye level when seated (around 42–48 inches
from the floor).
Console Height: 20–26 inches depending on screen height.
Side Tables
Height: 22–26 inches (level with or slightly below armrest of sofa/chair).
Clearance: Keep at least 18–24 inches away from walkways or other furniture for ease of access.
Clearance / Walkways
Main Walkways: Minimum 36 inches wide.
Between Furniture: 18–24 inches for comfortable circulation.
BATHROOM

Seat Height: 15–19 inches from floor
(17–19 inches is more comfortable for
adults – ADA compliant).
Clearance Around:
Side clearance: Minimum 15 inches
from the center of the toilet to any
wall or fixture.
Front clearance: At least 21–24 inches
in front for comfortable access.

Standard Size: Minimum 30" x 30"
(preferably 36" x 36" for more
comfort).
Entry Clearance: 24–30 inches in
front of the shower for easy
entry/exit.
Shower Head Height: 72–80 inches
from the floor.

Standard Size: 60" L x 30–32" W x 14–20" H.
Clearance in Front: Minimum 24 inches for safe and
comfortable access.
Faucet Height: Around 28 inches from the floor (varies
with style).
🧼 Vanity / Sink
Counter Height: 32–36 inches from floor.
Sink Bowl Depth: 5–8 inches.
Clearance in Front: At least 30 inches for comfortable use.
Mirror Height: Bottom edge around 38–42 inches from the
floor (should align with average eye level).
🚶 General Walkway / Movement Space
Minimum Aisle Width: 30–36 inches for comfortable
movement.
Door Clearance: At least 32 inches wide for entry doors
(ADA recommends 36 inches).

Clearance in Front: Minimum 36 inches to allow
door to open fully.
Side Clearance: At least 1 inch from walls or
counters for airflow and access.
Cabinets
Base Cabinet Height: 34–36 inches.
Wall Cabinet Height: Bottom should be 18 inches
above countertop.
Top Shelf Height: Should not exceed 72 inches for
easy reach.
Clearance Around: At least 42 inches on all sides
for movement and appliance access.
