What is the Solar System?
A solar system is a collection of celestial bodies bound by gravity, including the
Sun, planets, moons, asteroids, and comets. Our solar system was created
approximately 4.6 billion years ago from a rotating disk of gas and dust. The solar
system is made up of the sun and everything that orbits around it. This includes
eight planets like Earth, Mars, and Jupiter along with their moons. There are also
smaller objects like dwarf planets, asteroids, and comets. All these bodies are held
together by the sun's gravity and move around it in different paths. The solar system
is part of the Milky Way galaxy, which is one of many galaxies in the universe.

Earth: The Unique
Planet
Earth's Position
Earth is the third planet from the sun, about 93 million
miles away. It orbits the sun in a path that takes about
365 days to complete. Earth is located between Venus
and Mars. This position gives it the right amount of
sunlight to support life, creating a variety of climates and
ecosystems. Earth's tilt also causes the changing
seasons, making it a unique place to live.
Earth’s
Characteristics
Earth is the only planet known to support life. It has layers,
including a hot core and a protective atmosphere that blocks
harmful rays. About 71% of its surface is water, which cycles
through clouds and rain, helping life thrive. Earth spins every 24
hours, creating day and night, and its tilt and orbit around the
Sun cause seasons. Its moving crust forms mountains and
causes earthquakes, while the Moon helps stabilize Earth’s tilt
and control tides. These features make Earth ideal for life.
The Role of Earth’s Atmosphere
Earth’s atmosphere is essential for making the planet livable. It acts as a protective
shield, blocking harmful solar radiation, like ultraviolet rays, while letting sunlight in
for warmth and photosynthesis. The atmosphere also helps control Earth’s
temperature, preventing extreme heat during the day and freezing cold at night. It
traps some of the Sun's heat through the greenhouse effect, keeping temperatures
stable. The atmosphere provides oxygen for breathing and carbon dioxide for plants,
both crucial for life. It also drives weather patterns and the water cycle, spreading
fresh water and nutrients across Earth. In short, the atmosphere is vital for life,
stable temperatures, and water movement on our planet.

and Rotation
Earth's Orbit
Earth’s orbit and rotation shape day, night, and the seasons.
Earth rotates on its axis every 24 hours, which gives us day
and night. This axis is slightly tilted at 23.5°, which is why we
have seasons. As Earth orbits the Sun over the course of a
year (365.25 days), different parts of the planet tilt closer to
or farther from the Sun, creating seasonal changes. Earth’s
orbit around the Sun is an oval shape, or ellipse, meaning it
isn’t always the same distance from the Sun. Despite this,
the tilt of the axis has a bigger impact on seasons than the
distance from the Sun. This combination of orbit and tilt
leads to the cycles of day, night, and seasons, making life
more dynamic on Earth.
Tilt of Earth’s Axis
The tilt of Earth’s axis is about 23.5°, which means Earth is
slightly tilted as it orbits the Sun. This tilt is what causes seasons.
As Earth moves around the Sun, different parts of the planet lean
closer to or farther from the Sun, changing the amount of sunlight
they receive. When one hemisphere tilts toward the Sun, it
experiences summer, while the opposite hemisphere has winter.
This tilt makes temperatures and daylight vary throughout the
year, giving us spring, summer, fall, and winter.

Day and Night Cycle
The day and night cycle on Earth is caused by its rotation. Earth
spins around its axis once every 24 hours, creating periods of
daylight and darkness. As Earth rotates, the side facing the Sun
experiences day, receiving light and warmth, while the opposite
side experiences night. This rotation happens at a steady pace,
making day and night roughly equal in length, although this
varies slightly depending on the time of year and location. This
regular spinning motion creates the daily rhythm of day and
night that supports life and regulates activities on Earth.
