At the age of five, African elephant Tange was
captured from the wild and imported to North
America. She spent the next 26 years at a zoo in
Georgia until they decided to retire their elephants
from public life. In 2004, Tange became one of the
first African elephants at The Elephant Sanctuary.

Tange’s weekly diet includes hay, Mazuri2, spinach,
peanut butter, fresh produce such as carrots,
apples, sweet potatoes, celery, bananas, squash,
broccoli, oranges, grapes, watermelon and
nutritional supplements to assist with normal agerelated changes.
Like many of The Sanctuary’s residents, Tange,
now 45, is considered to be an older, aging
elephant. The health of these geriatric residents
is the primary focus of our Veterinarians and
Caregivers. Along with room to roam and daily
husbandry and veterinary care, a well-rounded,
nutritious diet is vital to their well-being.
In the wild, elephants will spend 18 hours or more
a day foraging for food. In captivity, an elephant’s
life looks very different. Planning and maintaining
a high-quality diet for an elephant that weighs
9000 pounds takes teamwork and professional
oversight.
At The Sanctuary, each elephant has an individual
dietary plan to meet her specific nutritional needs.
Caregivers start their day at 7.00 a.m. and work
into the evening, preparing meals for the elephants
and then delivering them in the 2700-acre habitat.
Restaurant-grade produce is delivered weekly
and has to be chopped into portions. Grains are
measured, supplements weighed and hay divided.
Diets change seasonally as the elephants take full
advantage of the diverse natural habitats.

Additionally, Caregivers provide food in goaloriented ways that encourage natural foraging
skills, as well as sensory activities, walking
longer distances and enhancing brain function.
For Billie, a 56-year-old Asian elephant who has
arthritis, Caregivers provide a trail of food for
her to follow with a favorite treat at the end. This
promotes foraging and encourages her to take
longer walks to alleviate stiff joints.

Providing each elephant with an individual diet is a huge part
of every Caregiver’s day. It is hard work, but rewarding to see
an aging elephant healthy and active.”

Partnering with YOU is important to ensure that
all of the elephants at The Sanctuary have skilled
and professional Veterinary and Husbandry care,
well-maintained barns and facilities, access to an
expansive natural habitat and a diet of nutritious
food for life. Providing Tange, Flora, Sukari, Nosey,
Shirley, Tarra, Sissy, Debbie, Ronnie, Minnie and
Billie with the care they need to live a healthy life
takes a team that INCLUDES YOU. We hope you
will join us in 2018 as we celebrate another year
of health and well-being and a future of goldstandard care for all.

Should Netball Be Our National Sport?
By Alasdair McClintock on May 1, 2019 in Sport
“Cricket is soooo boring!” “Rugby is a blood sport!”
“I’ve no time for Aerial Ping-Pong1!” “Soccer is for
pansies!” You’ll hear nearly every big Australian sport
cop a spray2 from someone at some stage, but when
5 was the last time you heard a shot fired at the good
name of netball?
Well, I think it’s about time someone did.
Great for the joints, by Liz Ellis.
Joking! I’d never do such a thing. Heck, I love
every sport. Except UFC3, but I’d prefer those folks
10 punched each other than me, so there’s that at least.
It’s fair to say netball is the favourite child of the Aussie family. The genial, good looking (but not
too good looking) younger one, who doesn’t have the hang-ups of its siblings and just wants to go
about its business, having a merry old time.
According to a very difficult government website to work out, it is the sixth most popular sport in
15 the country, in terms of participation, in either New South Wales, the whole country, or just children
aged from 0-14 years. Smarter people than me can probably work this out very easily, but I did not
want to delve further because I got a headache and slightly angry just looking at the page.
But, while the numbers may not fully add up for it to be our national sport, I argue that it holds
the dearest spot in our national hearts by default. We all like it. We all smile when we see it. Our
20 national team, the Diamonds, is also very good. They win a lot of things. Which, years gone by,
may not have been the biggest deal, but now is like hens’ teeth4.
The national netball comp, creatively named ‘Suncorp Super Netball’ will be in full swing during
May. You should get down to a few games. You can also watch a few games live on free-to-air.
Channel Nine, to be precise. You know, like most major sports.

Aerial Ping-Pong: slang for ‘Australian rules football’
Cop a spray: Australian idiom meaning to get angrily yelled at
UFC: an abbreviation for ‘Ultimate Fighting Championship’, an American mixed
