MOSSES AND FERNS
Mosses and ferns are two types of plants that belong to a group called nonflowering plants. They are important because they help us understand the
evolution of plants from water to land and show different ways plants
reproduce.
MOSSES
Mosses are small, green, soft plants that usually grow in moist, shady places
like forests, rocks, and near streams. They don’t have flowers or seeds.
Instead, mosses reproduce by spores.
STRUCTURE OF MOSSES
• Rhizoids: Root-like structures that hold the moss to the ground but do
not absorb water like true roots.
• Stem and leaves: Mosses have tiny stems covered with small, leaf-like
structures.
• Spores: Produced in capsules usually found at the end of stalks, these
spores help mosses reproduce.
REPRODUCTION OF MOSSES
Mosses reproduce both sexually and asexually:
• Asexual reproduction: This happens when parts of the moss, like leaves
or stems, break off and grow into new moss plants. This process doesn’t
involve seeds or spores.
• Sexual reproduction: Mosses have two types of reproductive organs:
◦ Antheridia produce sperm cells.
◦ Archegonia produce egg cells.
FERNS
Ferns are larger than mosses and are often seen in forests, gardens, and
shady areas. Like mosses, ferns do not produce seeds or flowers. Instead,
they reproduce using spores found on the undersides of their leaves.
STRUCTURE OF FERNS
• Roots: Ferns have true roots, which absorb water and nutrients from the
soil.
• Fronds: These are the large leaves of ferns. On the underside of the
fronds, you can find clusters of sporangia (called sori) that produce
spores.
• Vascular system: Ferns have veins inside their fronds that carry water
and nutrients, unlike mosses.
REPRODUCTION OF FERNS
Ferns also reproduce both sexually and asexually:
• Asexual reproduction: Some ferns can reproduce through rhizomes,
which are underground stems that grow horizontally and can produce
new fern plants.
• Sexual reproduction: Fern spores grow into a small heart-shaped plant
called a prothallus, which has both male and female reproductive
organs.
◦ The male organs release sperm that swim through water to
fertilize eggs in the female organs.
