SUSTAINABLE
RESOURCES
ENJOY;)
What is a resource?
A resource is any substance , organism or source of energy that we
take from the environment.
Now a sustainable resource , is a resource that is renewed by the
activity of organisms without it running out. Some examples of these
sustainable resources or renewable resources that can be
maintained are timber harvested from forests and fish harvested
from sea and lakes.
Some non-renewable resources are those of : fossil fuels and
minerals .
Sustainable timber
production
Timber is a valuable resource as it is used
in many industries to make a great
variety of products. Much of this timber
comes from forest that are managed to
ensure continuous production.
Continuous production includes the act
of replanting trees , so that they are
restocked, to ensure that the resource
can continue being harvested.
Some protected areas of the forests,
have established a new policy of no
felling. This protects the biodiversity of the
tree species as well other living organisms
that live in that area.
Many publicities campaigns have
educated timber companies, retailers
and consumers to use timber that is
certified as taken from sustainable
resources.
Sustainable fishing
Many populations of fish are depleted by overfishing, causing them
to not be sustainable.
Technology has now developed ways of monitoring the fish stocks(
populations of fish) so that they remain sustainable.
Fish stock can be conserved using education, to teach people how
to purchase fish from sustainable stocks.
Fish stocks can also be conserved through controlled net types were
by the fishermen have to have a certain minimum size, when they
are fishing.
Some areas are even protected, to ensure that the fish around that
area is safe, and so that leads to fishermen not being allowed to fish
in that zone.
Now let’s watch two short videos that enlighten us on sustainable
fishing sustainable development.
