English Morphology and Syntax (LN 202)
Task Sheet Assignment (30%)
"A phrase is a syntactic unit headed by a noun, a verb, an adjective, an adverb or a
preposition."
In light of the above statement, (a) differentiate between the English phrase types
and their governing rules, (b) extract verb phrases only from a text of your
choice, (c) analyze the extracted verb phrases in terms of their structure, tense,
voice and aspect and (c) discuss how these verb phrases contribute to conveying
the text message.
Data: 500 words of your choice – must be recent starting from the year 2022 onwards
Your paper must include the following:
I Introduction
II Body (Theoretical background & Related Studies)
o Review four to five academic recent sources on:
English phrase types
Previous studies analyzing English verb phrases
III Methods and Data Analysis
IV Results and discussion
V Conclusion
VI References
VII The appendix (including the text you analyzed)
After submitting your written assignment via Turnitin, you are required to
orally present it in class.

Your paper should follow APA style as per page numbering, in-text citation,
and referencing.
Your paper is to be written in Times New Roman, Font 12, and double
spaced.
Data can be extracted from a story, a movie, a podcast, a radio program, a
news report, an article, a speech, a biography or an autobiography.
