Introduction
The American War of Independence was a major
event in world history. It took place from 1776 to
1783 and was fought between the 13 American
colonies and Great Britain. The war began because
the American people wanted freedom and
independence from British rule. It ended with the
birth of a new country called the United States of
America.
Causes of the War
There were many reasons why the American War of
Independence started. The American colonies were
different from each other. In the north, most people
were simple farmers, shipbuilders, and hardworking
tradesmen. They were strict Protestants. In the
central areas like Maryland, there were people of
many religions, including Catholics. The southern
colonies had large farms called plantations, and many
of them used enslaved Africans to do the work. These
landowners had strong ties with Britain and wanted
to keep things the same.
Each colony wanted to keep its own power and didn’t
want the British government to control them too
much. Some leaders in the colonies wanted to
become powerful themselves and encouraged
ordinary people to fight against British rule. They
used slogans like “No taxation without
representation” to gather support.
Important Events and Outcome
The war started with small fights, but soon it became
a big war. After years of fighting, the war finally
ended in 1783 with the Treaty of Paris. This treaty
had many important results:
Britain officially recognized the United States as
an independent country.
France got back some small towns in India to
trade again.
