Work, Health, and Safety (WHS)
As stated in the University of Sydney Work Health and Safety
(WHS) Policy 2016, students and staff must:
a) Take reasonable care for their own health and safety, and
that of others
b) Comply with instructions about WHS
c) Use personal protective equipment and clothing as instructed
d) Promptly report work related hazards, injuries and incidents,
including near misses
e) Cooperate with emergency procedures

Safety Placards
– Observe safety placards found at
entrances of lab spaces.
– The placards include the following
information:
– Hazards in the area
– Safety precautions required
(including personal protective
equipment (PPE) requirements)
– Emergency contact details of
the Emergency Fire Warden,
First Aid Officer, and university
services

Physical Containment 1 (PC1) Lab Rules
– Lab 260 is a PC1 laboratory.
– No eating, drinking, or applying cosmetics in the lab.
– Do not bring food or drink into the main lab area.
– Lockers can be used for the storage of personal
belongings during classes. Food or drink (including
water bottles) must be kept in lockers.
– Students must be accompanied by their tutor or
demonstrator to access the teaching lab. Unsupervised
students will be requested to vacate the lab.

Physical Containment 1 (PC1) Lab Rules
– Hair longer than shoulder length must be tied back. Loose
clothing/jewelry must be securely fastened or secured.
– Waterproof coverings (e.g., band-aids) are required over
any break in the skin.
– Practice good hygiene. Disposable face masks may be
provided upon request. Do not enter the lab if you feel
unwell with any cold or flu symptoms.
– Before leaving the lab, all personnel must wash their
hands with soap and water or use hand sanitizer.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
– All personnel must wear enclosed shoes in the teaching laboratories.
– Personnel wearing inappropriate footwear will not be permitted to enter
the laboratory space.
– Examples of appropriate lab footwear are shown below. Shoes must be
closed, cover the top of the foot and made of a non-absorbent material.

WHS Compliance

Students must bring their own lab coat and safety glasses and
wear them before conducting the laboratory activities.

Lab coats extending to the knee must be worn to protect your
skin and clothes from hazardous materials or spills.
–
Safety glasses must be worn in the lab.
– Prescription spectacles may not be sufficient eye protection
and safety glasses may need to be worn over them.
–
Disposable gloves are provided and are to be worn when
handling hazardous materials.
– Do not wear gloves when using computers, keyboards,
personal electronic devices, or touching door handles.
– Used gloves must be disposed of in yellow clinical waste
bins.
–
Remove all PPE and wash your hands whenever you exit the lab.

Working with Chemicals
– A fume cupboard (FC) is a ventilated enclosure that provides
air extraction to remove any fumes and hazards within it. FCs
are designed to protect you and the other people in the lab
from being exposed to chemical vapours.
– FCs are allocated according to the practical requirements and
risk assessments.

Waste Disposal
All lab-generated waste must be disposed of in
the correct waste receptacles.
Consult the teaching staff or a technical staff
member for the correct waste disposal procedures
for your lab work.
Do not dispose or pour chemicals or biologicals
down the sink. Use provided liquid waste
containers as directed by the teaching staff.

Safety Equipment
– Emergency safety showers and
eyewash stations are available in the
main lab area (four in total)
– First Aid Kit is near the door of 260
– Automated External Defibrillator (AED)
is available on J03 Level 2 (outside 260)
– Chemical spill kits are available at the
back of 260 (in a yellow bin)
– Notify Technical Staff immediately if any
incidents occur (contact details are
located on safety placards).

WHS Responsibilities
Emergency
Procedures
– Take responsibility for your own actions and
don't put yourself or others at risk of injury
or illness.
– Be prepared to act independently in
an emergency, warn others who may be in
danger and report emergencies to Technical
Staff or Security by calling 9351 3333.
– The Emergency Power Off button may be
pressed to cut power to socket-outlets in an
emergency
– If a building evacuation alarm is sounding,
make sure your workspace is safe before
leaving via the closest emergency exit.

Emergency Procedures
Fire Alarm - You will hear 2 tones.
–
“Beep beep” means prepare to evacuate. Listen for instructions to exit the
building or stay in place. Secure valuables/personal belongings. Ensure
workplace is safe before leaving and shut down processes if safe to do so.
– “Whoop whoop” means evacuate the building immediately. Do not attempt
to collect personal belongings from lockers as this will cause delay.
Emergency Assembly Area
- When evacuating the building, evacuate via your
closest safe exit by following the green exit signs.
- Do not use the lifts.
- Follow the directions of the Emergency Wardens.
- Proceed to the assembly area. The assembly area is
Cadigal Green.
- Stay at the assembly area until further instruction has
been provided.
