HOW TO BE A
CONFIDENT
FRENCH SPEAKER
A guide for English-speakers.
Bonjour French Learner !
Moi, c'est Alex.
French Language Coach & Founder of French in Plain Sight
Merci beaucoup for downloading this free guide on how YOU can
cut through the fluff and focus on what's important in order to
speak French with confidence in your francophone country!
What you won't find in this guide is how to become fluent
tomorrow. French is a marathon, not a sprint. These are all actions
I've had to take as an English person in France that have got me to
conversational fluency over time.
If you truly follow these steps and apply them to your own
situation, you WILL set yourself up for success.
Allez ! C'est parti !

SPEAK FRENCH WITH CONFIDENCE
EN 6 ETAPES
1. SPEAK...
2. TO THE RIGHT PEOPLE
A simple one on the surface, but stick
with me. Are you speaking yet? Are you
holding off until it feels right? Until you
have enough vocab?
Where you have the majority of your
interactions and conversations is
critically important for your confidence
and for your progression as a
francophone.
Speaking French is the only way to get
better at speaking French. So, to reach
your dream of being a confident French
speaker, the sooner you start, the sooner
you'll get there!
Make sure that you're speaking in an
environment with patient people who
encourage you.
3. BE SELFISH
4. LET GO
When you first meet a new French
speaker, make the decision to introduce
yourself in French. It goes a long way to
setting the "default" language of the
future relationship to French. You might
need to do it a few times but it works.
Worrying about making mistakes, about
mispronouncing words, or getting
blocked mid-sentence only holds you
back from your path to fluency.
Get in your practice however you can.
You are responsible for your French.
5. BE KIND TO YOURSELF
It's those that truly accept that it's
GOING to happen that make progress
WAY SOONER.
6. SET GOALS
Obviously, you can't go from beginner to
fluent overnight. Emotions don't listen to
reason though.
French is a marathon, not a sprint.
There are a LOT of ups and downs.
It's quite normal to feel guilty when
French people are speaking English to you
all the time.
It's extremely important for your
motivation that you have topics planned
out for the week and month to come
that you want to learn to speak about.
Push yourself with every interaction. If
the rest is in English, that's fine!

WHEN YOU FOLLOW THESE STEPS,
WONDERFUL THINGS HAPPEN...
You'll be thrust into a virtuous circle whereby each action you take makes
you want to speak more.
You will develop a positive relationship with the language which is crucial
because it:
Stops you criticising yourself and guilt-tripping yourself each time you
have a conversation in which you don't speak perfectly.
Instead means you look forward to the next time instead of dreading it.
Leads you to see French as a challenge rather than a trial.
Eradicates the embarrassment you feel before opening your mouth.
Reduces frustration and channels it towards doing better next time.
Inevitably makes your French encounters and life in France much more
comfortable as you can communicate more.
Reduces your stress levels and therefore improves your health.

NEED A LITTLE
EXTRA HELP?
I help my students in a few of ways to achieve their French goals:
1. In my workbook for getting the most out of your French conversations.
2. As part of the Confident French Speaker Community - a safe space for
intermediates to practise without judgment and learn to be confident,
independent French speakers.
3. Or by working together one-on-one with personalised coaching.
Working with me is different to working with a native because I understand
the language on a deep level from the perspective of an English speaker,
and coaching focuses on the student as a whole rather than just the nuts
and bolts of the language in order to unlock confidence.

Best of luck, French Speaker! (Oui, c'est toi !)
