Raising Mental Health Awareness Through Technology
Mental health is one of the most important parts of our overall well-being, but it often gets
overlooked. Many people don’t talk about it because of stigma, lack of awareness, or simply not
knowing how to get help. This issue affects everyone like the teenagers, elderly people,
individuals with disabilities, and people from different countries. So, I started thinking about
how to communicate mental health awareness to all these different groups, and I realized that
technology is the best way to reach them.
When it comes to teenagers, platforms like Instagram and TikTok are great. Teens spend a lot of
time on these apps, watching and sharing short, creative videos. If I were to use these platforms,
I would make mental health content that’s quick, easy to understand, and fun to watch. I could
make videos about how important it is to take care of your mental health, how to recognize when
you’re struggling, and where to find help. Using popular trends, challenges, and polls would
make it more engaging, and teenagers would be more likely to share the content with their
friends. It’s important to reach them in a way that feels natural to their everyday lives.
For elderly people, the approach would be different. I would focus on Facebook and YouTube
because many elderly people use these platforms to stay connected and learn new things. Here, I
could make longer videos or write simple posts explaining mental health and how it affects them.
Many elderly people didn’t grow up with conversations around mental health, so the content
would need to be simple and easy to follow. I would also consider doing live Q&A sessions
where they could ask questions and get real-time answers. Facebook groups could be a good way
for elderly people to share their experiences and support each other.
For people with disabilities, I would make sure everything is as accessible as possible.
Technology has made great progress in helping people with disabilities, and we need to use those
tools to raise mental health awareness. For example, screen reader-friendly websites and apps
could make mental health resources available to those who are visually impaired. Captioned
videos or videos with sign language would help people with hearing impairments. Podcasts are
another good option for people who can’t easily read or watch videos. The goal here is to make
sure everyone, no matter their ability, has access to mental health information and support.
When reaching out to international audiences, the challenge is communicating in different
languages and being sensitive to different cultures. Mental health is viewed differently around
the world, so it’s important to keep that in mind. Platforms like YouTube, WhatsApp, and Twitter
(X) are good for reaching a global audience. I would create videos with subtitles in different
languages so more people can understand the content. On WhatsApp, I could create groups
where people from different countries can join and talk about mental health in a safe space.
Twitter is also great for quick discussions and sharing information globally.
Out of all these options, I would choose YouTube as my main platform. YouTube is used all over
the world, and it’s easy to create content that works for everyone. It allows for longer videos with
subtitles in different languages, making it accessible for international audiences and elderly
people. YouTube also has accessibility settings, so people with disabilities can engage with the
content. Teenagers also use YouTube, so it’s a good fit for them too. I like that YouTube lets me
create different types of content, like educational series, live Q&As, and videos with mental
health professionals. It would allow me to build a community where people feel supported and
informed. I can also make daily vlogs sharing what I experienced as a person who have already
suffer from it and also inviting a professional person who can assist me and knowledgeable about
this because I do believe that we can’t consult anyone if we’re not that knowledgeable about the
mental state of a person.
In the end, if I had the chance to post my content on any platform, YouTube would be my top
choice. Its wide reach and ability to cater to different audiences make it the best tool to raise
awareness about mental health. Through YouTube, I can reach teenagers, elderly people,
individuals with disabilities, and international audiences, ensuring that everyone can learn about
mental health and find the support they need.
