d. Historical Background
Year 2023, when the Social Work Students are conducting their Community
Organizing in Purok Masipag, and reaching out for a targeted group for their Group
work, we chose Construction Workers since nowadays there are many people building
infrastructure, so everywhere you can see construction workers and a lot of them
exists in the Purok. The Social Work Students agreed because construction workers
need a permanent job because there is not always a house or building to work on.
The social work students conducted an intake based on the listing that the constructor
gave. The social work students were able to form a group composed of seven (7) of
construction workers. They were chosen as members of the group because they are
qualified as construction workers, who falls under any of the following categories on
the Section 2. Declaration of Policy, House Bill 7894 An act providing for a magna
carta for all workers in the construction industry. On December 4, 2023 , the Social
Work Students conducted their first meeting with the construction workers to elect
officers, formulate vision, mission and goals. The elected president was Mr. Rowell A.
Lartino and with Sitong Madrid as the Vice President while Ronnie Vicente was
elected as Secretary. They also named their group as Mapisan Construction Workers,
Mapisan is their group name and it also means “hardworking” to describe their group
as Construction Workers who are hardworking despite of their challenges as a head
of their family.
II. PRESENTING PROBLEM
The Mapisan construction workers are currently facing challenges with their
finances.
III. GROUP SOCIO-ECONOMIC BACKGROUND
The Mapisan Construction Workers group is composed of Construction Workers who are
the only provider of their family needs and sustenance. They are mostly in the age of 3542years old and have been some construction workers for 3 years, most of the members
are elementary graduate, while one of them finished until high school, they are earning
8,400 every month. Their biological and socio-economic condition have been a challenge
for them to survive every day. All the members have experienced their lowest time when
the pandemic came, and although they have a common ground, their origins of struggles
are different. Most of them are the bread winner in their family while their children were
still very young, and they had all the responsibilities to do and to provide. Four of them
are married and one of them is live in. Two of them is only rented their house and lot, five
of them have their own house and lot, the group consider themselves as a type of
construction workers who have to provide for their family needs. They are responsible to
provide for their family needs because they are the head of the family.
As construction workers, they believe that their work are their only source of happiness,
so their children also give the same love towards them. Their only dream is to have a
permanent job, or own income and anything that they can use as a source of income.
Most of the members have at least 1-3 children, and some are still depending on them
because they are also too young to work. Although most of the construction worker’s
children are still students. Most of the family size of the members are small. They have a
healthy relationship with their own families and parents, they spend time and share their
problem to each other. Their children are studying well to have a better grade because
they understand their parent’s situation. The construction workers have lots of dreams for
their children and family and that is to finish their children studies and become good
persons. The community where the members are currently residing are peaceful, and has
helpful neighbors. The houses of the members were made of light materials only. Most
have their own house and lot, some are rented the lot but has a house. Their community
is clean and safe, and surrounded with trees and animals. this also means that the
environment where the group is resided is having a good air to breath. Most of the
members have their own water and electric supply. They also have responsive Purok
Leader and active Purok officers who are always ready to help them when they are in
need. In addition, their barangay is also very responsive to their needs and always
commends their purok for its cleanliness and safety.
IV. ASSESSMENT STATEMENT
The Mapisan Construction Worker group has been struggling to finance their
daily needs, especially for their child’s needs. According to them, life was not easy for
them especially when there is no job and then there is still a family to support, it has
been a challenging role for them to be a head of the family. This becomes a problem
for them to sustain their family needs, it’s difficult for them to support all their wants as
a head of the family. All of them just trying to live and coping with it every day. The
group are composed of fathers who would sacrifice everything for their children and
family they are still grateful that they have their children and a wife who gives them
the strength to live happily who are also their motivation to keep going and be blessed
in life. They are very responsible parents because they make sure that their children
and family are growing up strong and has a positive outcome in life. They spent most
of their time working to survive for their everyday life but they believe that it’s part of
their lives to face challenges. As they carrying the responsibility of as a parent and
also head of the family, they still hoping for a better future for their family. They have
a big potential as a group, because they are very cooperative. They also share their
thoughts in believing a better future. The group has a lot of toughness, one of this is
being hardworking to their goals because they believe that it’s all for the improvement
of their lives condition. In the construction world, tools are important. But the greatest
tool you have is your mind (rebecca 2000) . Construction work is no joke, but that
doesn’t mean there’s no room for laughter on the job site. A well-timed joke can do a
lot to lift spirits on a hard work day. Plus, it’s also great for building camaraderie among
workers — something construction workers do well. Increased teamwork, mood and
energy are all known benefits of working outdoors. When fathers makes all the
decisions and provides for their family needs no permanent job task losing hope to
survive which is the group also experience for the past years since they working as
construction workers. In addition, in Maslow’s Theory The physiological needs are the
basic needs of the human required for the survival. They involve food, sleep etc. The
safety need from the second main requirement of having proper shelter and lead a
safer life. The social needs involve the need for belonging to a group from where a
kind of affection, care is gained and received. The self-expression needs involve the
esteem needs where a respect to one is gained. Self-fulfillment or self-actualization
involve development of the personnel to full potential. The group is very determined
to help themselves and have a better life in the future .
