can be divided into three main sections: the crust, mantle, and core, which are further
subdivided into the outer core and inner core.

The external structure of the Earth includes the following layers:
1. Crust

Characteristics: The crust is the Earth's outermost solid layer and comes in two types:
continental and oceanic.

Continental Crust: Thick (about 30–70 km), less dense, primarily composed of
granite and other light silicate minerals.

Oceanic Crust: Thin (about 5–10 km), denser, mostly composed of basalt and
other dark silicate minerals.

Role: Acts as the surface layer where life exists. It holds soils, minerals, and rocks and
serves as the foundation for landforms such as mountains, valleys, and plains.
2. Lithosphere

Characteristics: The lithosphere is composed of the crust and the uppermost solid part of

It is rigid and brittle, and it’s broken into tectonic plates that move over the more
pliable asthenosphere beneath it.

Characteristics: The hydrosphere encompasses all water on Earth, including oceans,
rivers, lakes, groundwater, and glaciers.

It covers about 71% of Earth's surface, with oceans holding over 97% of the
planet’s water.

Exists in three states: liquid (oceans, rivers), solid (ice in glaciers and polar ice
caps), and vapor (water vapor in the atmosphere).

4. Biosphere

Characteristics: The biosphere includes all living organisms on Earth and their
