THE FEDERICK
HERZBERG THEORY
Theory
The FEDERICK HERZBERG theory is the
key concept in motivating employees at
the workplace
Theory
Developed by Frederick Herzberg in the 1950's this theory suggests that two types of factors
influences employees motivation which are motivators (satisfiers) and hygiene factors
(dissatisfiers)
THE TWO FACTORS DISCOVERY
MOTIVATORS(Intristic factors) : These factors increase job
satisfaction and encourage to work harder. They are related
to the nature of the work itself and include
ACHIEVEMENT
RECOGNATION
RESPONSIBILITY
ADVANCEMENT AND PERSONAL GROWTH
THE OTHER FACTORS
• HYGEINE FACTORS(Extrinsic factors) : These
factors do not increase motivation, but their
absense causes dissatisfaction. They are
related to work environment which include
• SALARY AND BENEFITS
• COMPANY POLICIES AND JOB SECURITY
• WORK CONDITIONS
• RELATIONSHIPS WITH COLLEAGUES
REAL WORLD
EXAMPLE
A software company trying
to improve satisfaction and
productivity
SCENARIO 1:The company
notices high turnover rates
and complaints about work
conditions, employees are
unhappy about
-low salaries and strict
policies
-poor office conditions
TO FIX THIS THE
COMPANY MUST
• √Increase salaries to match industry standards
• √Upgrade office equipment
• √Revise company policies to be more friendly
SCENARIO 2
• Monthly awards
• Skill training
• Giving employees ownership over projects
•
Result
• Employees feel valued engaged and driven to perform
better. They are not just satisfied but also motivated to
excel
KEY TAKEAWAY
• *Improving motivator leads to higher job satisfaction and
motivation
• *Improving hygiene factors prevents dissasfication
• *To keep employees motivated organisations should focus
on both removing dissasfication and increasing motivation
CONCLUSION
• The HERZBERG
theory highlights that
workplace
satisfaction and
motivation depends
on true factors :the
hygiene factors and
motivators which
provide opportunities
for growth
