When MSC Damla is east of Cape Agulhas en route from Ngqura to Cape Town, she encounters 10-metre seas, and
several containers break loose. (Later, they establish that 42 20-foot and 17 40-foot containers have been
damaged.)
She also develops a heavy list to port. Her master issues a MAYDAY call to which the SAMSA Search & Rescue Coordination Centre responds. They request the Air Force to send a helicopter to render assistance, and dispatch the
salvage tug Springbok from Cape Town. (The cost of the air force helicopter is borne by the government.)
Springbok arrives at the scene eight hours after sailing from Cape Town, and, after much hard work, is able to
connect a towing line and MSC Damla is towed to Cape Town, where they arrived 16 hours later.
