QUESTION 1: SALVAGE
Pretty Pioner, a 38 000t dwt vessel is on a voyage from Durban to Dubai (UAE). All
exterior doors in the accommodation had been secured before the ship arrives off
the Somali coast. While en route, the Officer of the Watch (OOW) notes on radar that
an unidentified vessel is speeding towards the ship and the lookout on the bridge
wing reports sighting a small boat. He sounds the alarm and the Captain arrives in
the bridge within 3 minutes and activates the international pirate attack signal. Also
calls for naval assistance on the ship’s radio. The crew also arrives in the bridge.
The Captain orders the helm hard to starboard to try to move away from pirates. The
South African frigate SAS Madiba that has a speed capacity of 35 knots responds,
indicating that she is 35 nautical miles away and is speeding to assist. When SAS
Madiba arrives the vessel had suffered structural damage and the master of MV
Pretty has requested a tug to tow her to the nearest port of refugee where she will
undergo repairs.
