Dear Students,
Please find the details of the project assigned to you for the Introduction to Environmental
Engineering course.
No. of students: 61
No. of groups: 12 (with 5 members in each group, 6 members in one group)
Submission Deadline: April 11, 2024 (11.59 PM).
Submission form: Soft copies (report in Word/PDF format).
Project statement:
You have been hired to provide a conceptual design for a new landfill site. As you can see from
the site map, you are currently planning on the construction of 4 cells over the next 4 years. Cell 1
will be constructed first – it will be a high rise landfill unit. Cell 2 will be constructed next, also a
high rise landfill unit and the waste be piggy-backed against the west side of Cell 1. Cell 3 will be
constructed next, again as a high rise unit, and the waste from this unit will be piggy-backed against
cells 1 and 2. Finally, cell 4 will be constructed, again as a high rise landfill unit, and the waste
will be piggybacked against the side slopes of Cells 1 and 3. All of these units will be constructed
to a height of 70 ft. Once these 4 units are in place, waste will be deposited on top of all 4 landfill
units. There is no new liner construction for this, but you refer to this as the high rise unit. The
high rise unit will be constructed so that the final height of waste in place will be 140 ft (70
additional ft will be placed on top of the first 70 ft). The side slopes for all of the landfill units will
constructed at 3:1.
Other information you will need as part of your design.
Waste population served: 350,000 in Jan 2025.
Waste population growth: 1.8%.
Waste generation rate: 0.8 kg per capita per day.
Fraction of waste land filled: 80%.
Cover content (CCv) = 0.16
Compacted waste density = 1,450 pcy
Cover soil density = 115 pcf
Your source of cover soil will be the existing soil stockpile on the site. Assume waste filling will
begin on Jan, 2027.
Please provide answers to the following questions. If you develop a well-organized spreadsheet, it
will save you a lot of time in the long run. Be prepared to turn in your spreadsheet with the project
when you will be asked to present and there will be a Q & A session too.
1. Provide a figure that shows the progression of land filling at the site. Figure 1 should include
cell 1 only, figure 2 should include cells 1 and 2, etc. Each of these figures should include a topo
of the final elevation of the unit after waste has been placed.
2. Provide a table that lists the volumes of each landfill unit (1, 2, 3, 4 and high rise) in cubic yards.
Include in this table the final entire landfill volume.
3. Provide a table that lists the capacity of each landfill unit in years (show the calculations for
each year). Include in this table the entire landfill capacity.
Note: Do not use AI tools as it may make mistakes and I will evaluate in your presentation of the
project.
