Contesting modernities can be understood as non-European thinkers disputing the eurocentric approach towards knowledge. Modernities were composed of different thinkers within
Europe during the enlightenment era who sought to explain things in a more rational and
scientific approach rather than relying on the church dogmas. Despite some of the discourses
by European thinkers being discerning mostly were rooted in racist beliefs that resulted in
Africans being treated as inferior human beings thus colonialization. As a response, African
thinkers are contesting modernities and writing their own African narratives. Steve Biko’s
philosophy of black consciousness in response to the apartheid era is a fitting example.
