Timeframe: 30 minutes
FCCLA National Program(s) Integration: A connection to real life careers is the huge need for teachers in Colorado
because of Colorado Universal Preschool. Colorado Universal Preschool is a program that offers voluntary, high
quality universal preschool to every Colorado child.
FCCLA Competitive Event (STAR Event, Skill Demonstration Event, FCCLA/LifeSmarts Knowledge Bowl, Knowledge
Matters) Integration: Teach or train is an event that recognizes participants who can demonstrate their ability to
explore and experience the career of teaching.
Learning Objectives: Learning objectives that have been used in my lesson for this age level in science are Exploration
& Curiosity, Cause and Effect, Making Simple Predictions, and 5. Classification and Sorting. Learning objectives for this
age group that i have incorporated into my lesson are Number Recognition and Counting, Understanding Quantity,
and Sorting and Classifying.
National Family and Consumer Sciences Standards: The national family and consumer sciences standards are to
analyze career paths within early childhood education and related services, analyze developmentally appropriate and
culturally responsive practices, demonstrate integration of curriculum and instruction to meet developmental needs,
demonstrating a safe and healthy learning environment, and demonstrate skills for building and maintaining positive
collaborative relationships, and demonstrate professional practices and standards related to working with children.
Career Readiness Practices (Select all that apply): Act as a responsible and contributing citizen and employee , apply
appropriate academic and technical skills, communicate clearly and effectively and with reason, and model integrity,

Materials Needed: 8 objects (magnets x4, chain, sand dollar, paper square, paper butterfly) clear bucket filled with
water
Instructional Strategies: experiential learning, play based learning, inquiry- based instruction.
Activity 1: lesson explanation
Activity 1 Timeframe: 5mins
Activity 1 Materials Needed:
Directions: In this part of the lesson I began by asking why if the children know what sinking and floating is if they did
then i would push them further and ask them why they thought htings float or sink. I told the children what sinking
and floating is and that Things that are heavy for their size go down or they sink.
Things that are light for their size stay up or they float.
Activity 2: predicting sinking and floating
Activity 2 Timeframe: 10 minutes
Activity 2 Materials: 8 objects (magnets x2, chain x2, sand dollar x2, paper butterflyx2) clear bucket filled with water
Directions: In this part of the lesson i asked the kids if the magnets were small and heavy or light and big. The
children would answer and then i would ask them if they think that it would float. This process was repeated for all
of the objects.
Activity 3: Testing predictions and trying sink and float
Activity 3 Timeframe: 15 minutes
Activity 3 Materials Needed: 8 objects (magnets x2, chain x2, sand dollar x2, paper butterfly x2 ) clear bucket filled
with water
Directions: in this part of the activity i had the children test out their predictions by putting different objects into
the water bucket and watching as they would either sink or float.
