Types of mixed conditionals
I. Past
present(mixed third/second conditional)
Use to talk about how a past event affects the present
oStructure: if+ past perfect, would+ base form
• Example: if I had studied medicine, I would be a doctor now
• (but I didn`t study medicine, so i`m not a doctor now)
• If they had studied harder, they would know the answers to this
equation
• (but they didn`t study hard in the past, so they don`t know the answers
Types of mixed conditionals
I. Present
past (mixed second/third conditional)
Use to talk about how a present situation affects a past result
oStructure: if+ past simple, would have+ pp
• Example: if she were more confident, she would have applied for
the job
• (but she isn`t confident now, so she didn`t apply in the past)
• If he were richer, he would have been travelled to Japan last year
• (but he isn`t rich now, so he didn`t travel to Japan last year)

• 1. I forgot my umbrella at home. I am soaked right now.

If alternatives: General Rule
• We usually do not change the tense when using alternatives to 'if'.
• We simply substitute 'if' with the appropriate alternative.
• The structure of the conditional stays the same.
Real Conditionals – Alternatives
• Alternatives: Provided (that), Providing (that), As long as, On
condition that, when
• Used in real conditionals (0 and 1) meaning 'only if'
• Example:
• If you study hard, you'll pass.
• → Provided that you study hard, you'll pass.
• → As long as you study hard, you'll pass.
• When you heat water, it boils
Unless = If not
• Used in real conditionals to mean 'if not'
• Example:
• You won’t pass if you don’t study.
• → You won’t pass unless you study.
Unreal Present – Second Conditional
• Structure: If + past simple, would + base verb
• Used for hypothetical situations now or in the future
• Alternatives: Supposing (that), Imagine (that), Provided (that), Were +
subject + to...
• Example:
• If I had more time, I would travel.
• → Supposing I had more time, I would travel.
• → Were I to have more time, I would travel.
Unreal Past – Third Conditional
• Structure: If + past perfect, would have + past participle
• Used for hypothetical or regretful past situations
• Alternatives: Had + subject + past participle, Supposing, Imagine,
Assuming (that)
• Example:
• If you had told me, I would have helped.
• → Had you told me, I would have helped.
• → Supposing you had studied harder, would you have passed?
Mixed Conditionals
• Combine different time references (past condition + present result)
• Structure: If + past perfect, would + base verb (now)
• Alternatives: Had + subject..., Supposing, Imagine
• Example:
• If I had studied medicine, I would be a doctor now.
• → Had I studied medicine, I would be a doctor now.
• → Supposing I had taken that job, I might be abroad now.
Formal Conditionals – Inversion
• In formal writing, 'if' is dropped and inversion is used.
• Examples:
• If I were you, I would apologize.
• → Were I you, I would apologize.
• If he had known, he would have acted differently.
• → Had he known, he would have acted differently.
