Page iv ---- Abstract
The Student Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) is a mandatory industrial
training program designed to bridge the gap between theoretical learning and real-world
applications. This report provides a detailed account of my internship experience at GTechnology and Gadgets, a company that specializes in smart locks, DSTV and free-to-air
installation, solar power installation, networking (WiFi installation), electric fence
installation, automatic gate installation, and CCTV camera installation.
Throughout my internship, I was assigned to the DSTV and free-to-air installation
department, where I actively participated in satellite TV installations, site surveys,
troubleshooting, and customer support. This report provides an overview of my job
schedule, experiences, challenges, observations, and recommendations. It also highlights
the significance of site surveys in ensuring proper satellite signal reception and the
importance of customer education on decoder usage.
CHAPTER ONE: INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of SIWES
The Student Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) is a program established to equip
students in tertiary institutions with practical knowledge and industry experience. It is
designed to provide students with an opportunity to apply their classroom knowledge in a
real-world environment, thereby preparing them for future careers. The program is crucial
in bridging the gap between academic theories and practical applications, ensuring that
students develop the skills and competencies required in their respective fields.
SIWES is coordinated by the Industrial Training Fund (ITF) and is a mandatory
requirement for students in technical, engineering, and science-based disciplines. By
participating in this scheme, students gain first-hand experience in their field of study,
enhance their problem-solving skills, and develop professional work ethics.

1.3 My Role in the Company
During my internship at G-Technology and Gadgets, I was placed in the DSTV and free-to-air
installation department. My primary duties included:
Conducting site surveys to determine the best location for satellite dish installations.
Installing DSTV and free-to-air decoders, ensuring optimal signal reception.
Troubleshooting and resolving signal issues for clients.
Educating customers on how to use their satellite TV systems effectively.
Assisting in the procurement and setup of installation materials.
This role provided me with hands-on experience in satellite TV technology, including the
alignment of satellite dishes, cable management, and signal optimization.
1.4 Importance of SIWES in Professional Development
The SIWES program plays a crucial role in preparing students for the workforce by:
Enhancing technical skills and practical knowledge in their field of study.
Improving problem-solving and analytical thinking abilities.
Providing exposure to workplace ethics and professional conduct.
Offering opportunities for networking and career growth.
By engaging in real-world projects and working alongside industry professionals, SIWES
participants gain the confidence and expertise required to excel in their careers.
CHAPTER TWO: JOB SCHEDULE AND EXPERIENCE GAINED
Job Schedule
Workdays: Monday to Friday
Work hours: 10 AM - 5 PM
Daily tasks:
Installation of DSTV and free-to-air decoders.
Conducting site surveys to determine the best satellite dish positioning.
Purchasing and assembling necessary equipment for installations.
Troubleshooting signal issues and aligning satellite dishes for optimal reception.
Educating customers on how to use their newly installed systems effectively.
Each day varied depending on the workload. Some days involved installing up to three
decoders, while others were dedicated to site surveys and procuring installation materials.
Experience Gained
Through this training, I developed a solid foundation in:
Decoder Installation: Understanding how to properly connect and configure both DSTV and
free-to-air decoders for customers.
Site Surveying: Learning how to assess an environment to determine the best position for
satellite dishes to ensure maximum signal strength.
Equipment Handling: Familiarizing myself with the tools and materials required for
efficient installation, including coaxial cables, satellite dishes, LNBs, and signal meters.
Signal Alignment: Gaining knowledge on how to adjust satellite dishes to optimize signal
reception, taking into consideration environmental factors such as obstacles and weather
conditions.
Troubleshooting and Customer Support: Acquiring problem-solving skills in diagnosing
weak signals, connection errors, and decoder malfunctions, as well as providing customer
education on decoder operation.
CHAPTER THREE: CHALLENGES ENCOUNTERED While the experience was rewarding, I
faced several challenges, including:
Poor Signal Reception: In some locations, especially areas surrounded by tall buildings or
dense trees, achieving optimal signal strength was difficult and required strategic dish
placement.
Weather Conditions: Rain and strong winds sometimes disrupted installations, causing
delays or requiring rescheduling.
Equipment Shortages: Occasionally, essential materials such as coaxial cables or connectors
were unavailable, leading to delays in completing installations.
Customer Preferences: Some customers requested additional services beyond our standard
installations, requiring extra time and effort to meet their expectations.
Technical Issues: Certain installations required troubleshooting due to decoder or satellite
dish alignment problems, which prolonged the setup process.
CHAPTER FOUR: OBSERVATIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS
Observations
Proper site surveys play a crucial role in ensuring that satellite dishes receive strong signals
and minimize disruptions.
Many customers prefer free-to-air decoders due to their affordability and availability of
non-subscription-based entertainment.
Some customers lack basic knowledge of how to operate their decoders, leading to frequent
calls for assistance.
Having a well-prepared toolkit with all necessary installation materials significantly
reduces installation time and improves efficiency.
Recommendations
Promoting Free-to-Air Decoders: Customers who are not interested in sports channels
should be encouraged to opt for free-to-air decoders as a cost-effective alternative.
Customer Education: Providing customers with a basic user guide on decoder operations
can reduce the number of post-installation inquiries.
Pre-Installation Equipment Checks: Ensuring that all required materials are available
before heading to an installation site can minimize delays.
Adapting to Environmental Conditions: Technicians should be equipped with weatherresistant tools and materials to handle installations under different environmental
conditions.
CHAPTER FIVE:
CONCLUSION My SIWES experience at G-Technology and Gadgets was highly valuable, providing me
with practical knowledge and industry exposure. I gained significant skills in DSTV and free-to-air
installation, site surveying, equipment handling, and troubleshooting. Additionally, the experience
helped me develop problem-solving abilities, teamwork skills, and customer service expertise.
Overall, my time at G-Technology and Gadgets was rewarding, and I am grateful for the
opportunity to learn and grow in this field. I believe the skills and experiences gained
during this internship will be instrumental in my future career development.
