Biodiversity
and
conservation
Genetic
biodiversity
refers to variation of genes
within the species
for example -we humans
genetically belong to the the
homo-sapiens group
but differ by certain
characteristics such as
-colour
-physical appearance
-height etc
Species diversities
the number of different
species present in an
ecosystem and relative
abundance of each of
those species.
Ecosystem diversities
It can be defined as diffrent
types of ecosystem based on
the geographical area for
example – terrestrial ecosystem
has desert ecosystem , forest
ecosystem , tundra ecosystem
Similarly aquatic ecosystem has
marine ecosystem and fresh
water ecosystem
Importance
of diversity
Biodiversity plays the
following role
Ecological role - provides
functioning ecosystems that supply
oxygen, clean air and water,
pollination of plants, pest control,
wastewater treatment and many
ecosystem services.
Economic role – provide high
variety of food : crops, livestock,
forestry, and fish are important food
source of human species
Scientific role-enables
scientists to undertake experiments
and studies on the DNA of plants and
animals in order to generate new
crops and therapies.
Loss of biodiversity
Endangered species- species
which are in danger of extinction
Vulnerable species- species
which are likely to be in danger of
extinction
Rare species- population of thes
species is very small in the world
Conservation of
biodiversity
• Efforts should be made to preserve the
species that are endangered
• Raise awareness among local
communities about the importance of
biodiversity and the role individuals can
play in conservation.
• Implement and enforce regulations to
restrict activities that could harm these
protected areas.
•
Undertake habitat restoration projects
to rehabilitate degraded ecosystems
and promote the recovery of native
flora and fauna.
Disaster
management
What is disaster
It is an undesirable
occurrence resulting from
forces that are largely
outside human control
Types of disaster
Flood
Disaster management
Preparedness:
Developing and implementing
comprehensive disaster preparedness plans
at the individual, community, and
governmental levels.
Early Warning Systems:
•Establishing and maintaining effective early
warning systems to provide timely alerts to
communities in the path of a potential
disaster.
Shelter and Evacuation:
•Establishing shelters for displaced
individuals and families.
Medical Assistance and Healthcare:
•Providing emergency medical care and
establishing temporary healthcare
