Procedure 1. The simple support and the roller support are to be fixed to the support frame at a distance equal to the span of the arch, i.e., 1000 mm. 2. The roller support must be anchored such that the dial gauge is located on the outside of the arch. 3. The wire rope at the roller end of the arch is to be passed over the pulley attached to the roller support. 4. A load hanger is to be placed at the end of the wire rope and at a selected location on the arch. 5. The dial gauge reading is to be zeroed. 6. A load is placed on the load hanger at the arch and the dial gauge reading at the roller support is noted. 7. Small loads are placed on the load hanger at the end of the wire rope to bring the support displacement back to zero. The load at this support represents the horizontal thrust. 8. The magnitude of the applied load and the load at the roller support are recorded. 9. The applied load is increased and steps 6 to 9 are repeated. 10. The experiment is repeated to obtain an average of two readings. Safety Precautions 1. Ensure the setup is stable and secure before starting. 2. Keep fingers away from pulleys, ropes, and moving parts. 3. Stay alert and pay attention during the experiment.
