ASSIGNMENT
1.What is eon?
Eon is a term used in geology, astronomy and cosmology to describe an extremely long,
indefinite period of time.eg Hadean (4.6 to 4.0 billion years ago).
2. Write a short note on the following; The Jurassic Period, Lithosphere and Petrology.
I. The Jurassic Period: This a major division of geologic time that lasted from approximately
201 to 145 million years. It is famously known as the age of dinosaurs. This period is also
marked by giants like Brachiosaurus and the breakup of the supercontinent Pangaea leading
to the formation of Atlantic Ocean.
II. Lithosphere: This is the rigid layer of the Earth comprising the crust and the uppermost
part of the mantle. It is broken in tectonic plates that float on the semi fluid asthenosphere
below causing tectonic, earthquakes and volcanic activity. It varies in thickness, being
thinner under the oceans and thicker under continents.
III. Petrology: This is a branch of geology that studies the origin, structure, composition and
formation of rocks. It is divided in 3 main sub fields namely Igneous Petrology, Sedimentary
Petrology and Metamorphic Petrology.
