Your charter is an important part of setting the stage for excellence. It is not to be created and filed
away. It is there to guide and help maintain the behaviors that you are committed to upholding. Pull
it out, re-read it, re-create it when there is a need, hold yourselves accountable. Those that use their
charter as a tool, have the highest performance in general. And remember, fewer clear words is
better than more fancy words.
Team Name - create one if you want or use the assigned name. Team Names are sometimes
touchstones for teams and a reminder of having fun.
Does the team charter have transition processes:
1. Team mission
2. Team environment - how will it work together such as phone calls, Skype, etc., times and days
3. Team environment - what is the positive environment that you want to create and how you will
accomplish this
4. Goals for the team
5. Sub-goals under the goals if applicable
6. Strategy to meet mission and alternative course of action if strategy is not working
7. How will the charter be kept alive
Does the team charter have action processes:
1. How will the team track its progress
2. How will the team communicate with team members
3. How will the team communicate issues and problems
4. How will the team help each other when they are struggling
5. How will the team prioritize the EMBA in relation to their jobs and family commitments
6. How will the team give each other feedback other than the required feedback
7. How will interdependent actions be handled, such as when multiple people are writing parts of
a whole assignment
8. How will team leaders be selected for tasks
9. How will team members take over tasks that are falling behind by other team members
10. How will team members hold each other accountable
11. How will the team decision-making process work; voting or consensus or a blend
12. How will the team measure its action processes
Does the team charter have interpersonal processes:
1. How will the team handle conflict when it arises
2. How will the team monitor itself to prevent conflict
3. How will the team learn from the inevitable conflict
4. How will the team create empathy, humor and fun so that there is a sense of team belonging
and esprit de corps
5. How will the team build trust and respect
6. How will the team learn about each other; learning styles, preferences, personality traits, other
7. How will the team express emotions
8. How will the team measure its interpersonal processes
9. How will the team celebrate successes and accomplishments
