REPORTED BY: EMILY MAGNOY LITERATURE OF THE REGIONS The literature of the regions in the Philippines reflects the diverse cultures, languages, and histories of the country's various provinces. Each region has developed its own distinct literary traditions. The literature from these regions often coexists with the national literature, reflecting the country’s multicultural identity. Despite the differences in language and culture, these regional literatures share common themes such as family, love, social justice, and resistance. LUZON The northern regions, including the Ilocos, Pangasinan, and Bicol, have rich literary traditions in various languages like Ilocano, Pangasinan, and Bikolano. The literature here is often characterized by folk tales, epics, and religious themes, reflecting the agricultural life and strong community ties. In Luzon, Region IV-A (CALABARZON) has some of the most famous literature in the Philippines. This region, which includes Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal, and Quezon, is home to many well-known Filipino writers and literary works. Famous Authors and Their Works CAVITE MARS RAVELO (1916-1988) ● A Filipino comic book cartoonist and graphic novelist. ● most successful Filipino comic artists ● He was the creator of the famous superheroine ‘Darna’, and the highest paid comic artist of his time. Literary Works ● Darna ● Captain Barbell ● Lastikman ● Dysebel ● Bondying LAGUNA JOSE RIZAL (1861-1896) ● A Filipino nationalist and polymath during the tail end of the Spanish colonial period of the Philippines. ● He is considered the national hero of the Philippines. ● His famous works are; “Noli me Tangere” “El Filibusterismo” and “Mi Ultimo Adios” BATANGAS EDGARDO MARANAN 1981 ● A Filipino poet, essayist, fiction writer, playwright, translator and writer of children’s stories. ● He wrote in Filipino and in English, has published 4 books of poetry, 20 books of children’s stories. ● His works are; “Ang panahon ni Cristy” RIZAL LIGAYA G. TIAMSON-RUBIN ● A multiple Carlos Palanca Memorial Awards for Literature recipient, and currently a professor of the University of the Philippines Diliman. ● Her works are; “Angono Rizal 4: Sa mata ng mga iskolar ng bayan” QUEZON HORACIO DE LA COSTA (1916-1977) ● The first Filipino Provincial Superior of the Society of Jesus in the Philippines, and a recognized authority in Philippine and Asian culture and history. ● His known work is Faith in God: Inspiration in Music Works: ● "The Jesuits in the Philippines, 1581–1768" VISAYAS In the central islands, including Cebu, Iloilo, and Negros, literature often includes oral traditions like “balak” (poetry) and “hinuklog” (riddles), as well as the "sugidanon" (epic) and “novels”. Cebuano literature is particularly prominent, with works in both Spanish and English. Literary Forms ● Myth Tungkung Langit and Alunsina ● Riddles Ang puno buko-boko Dahon daw abaniko, Bunga daw parasko, Perdegones ang liso. ● Proverbs Mauntay ang sanga nga linghod, Ang gulang na, matuod. ● Folk Songs Si Pilemon, Si Pilemon Dandansoy ● Poems Ang Ermita sa Baryo Hiligaynon Literature Iloilo and Negros Occidental are known for their strong tradition of Hiligaynon poetry, short stories, and novels. Writers like Iloilo-born Magdalena Jalandoni wrote important works like "Ang Mga Tunuk San Isa Ka Bulak". Kinaray-a Literature Antique is the home of Kinaray-a literature, with famous writers like Peter Solis Nery, who won multiple Palanca Awards. His stories and poetry celebrate the language and culture of the region. Epics and Folk Literature The region has rich oral traditions, including the "Hinilawod Epic" from Panay, one of the longest epics in the Philippines, telling the adventures of ancient Visayan heroes. Contemporary Writers Many modern writers from Western Visayas, like Iloilo’s Alice Tan Gonzales, continue to contribute to Philippine literature, keeping local languages and storytelling alive. Famous Authors and Their Works Magdalena Jalandoni (1891–1978, Iloilo) • A novelist and poet who wrote in “Hiligaynon”. • She was one of the first female writers in Philippine literature. Famous Work: • “Abg Mga Tunuk San Isa Ka Bulak” – A novel about Filipino struggles under Spanish rule. Peter Solis Nery (b. 1969, Iloilo) A "Palanca award-winning" writer who writes in "Kinaray-a, Hiligaynon, and English". He is known for his poetry, fiction, and plays. Famous Work: "The Passion of Jovita Fuentes -A play that won the Palanca Award and celebrates Filipino identity. Alice Tan Gonzales (b. 1946, Iloilo) A writer and professor who champions Hiligaynon literature and its preservation. Famous Work: "Sa Atong Dila"– A collection of short stories in Hiligaynon that depict Visayan culture and traditions. MINDANAO With a population of approximately 16 million, Mindanao is the second largest island and is known as the land of promise. Mindanao is divided into six administrative regions: the Zamboanga Peninsula, Northern Mindanao, Davao Region, Soccsksargen, Caraga Region and the autonomous Region of Bangsamoro SOCCSKSARGEN REGION XII The region was created by the virtue of Presidential Decree No. 742 on July 7th ,1975 and named as Central Mindanao. The most significant development in the political history of Mindanao was the organization of six politico-military districts in Mindanao in 1860. HISTORY The central district embracing Cotabato included Polloc, Illana Bay as far as the Western coast of Zamboanga at point Murcielagos and the Southern extremity of Mindanao down to point Glan. The capital of the government was Cotabato City until 1872 when the city was destroyed by a strong earthquake, after which the capital was Zamboanga City. FAMOUS AUTHORS AND THEIR WORKS Tita Lacambra Ayala (1931–2019, Davao) - A poet and artist who was a pioneer in modern "Mindanaoan literature". She founded a publishing house to support regional writers. Famous Work: "Sunflower Poems" – A collection of poetry about life in Mindanao. Ric de Ungria (b. 1953, Davao) - A poet, critic, and former chancellor of the University of the Philippines Mindanao. He promotes "Cebuano and English literature". Famous Work: "Tala Mundi: The Collected Poems of Ric de Ungria" – A poetry collection reflecting Filipino life and struggles. Maranao Epic Poet (BARMM, Lanao del Sur) - The "Darangen" epic was passed down through oral tradition by Maranao chanters and poets. Famous Work: "Darangen" – An epic about the hero "Bantugan", recognized as a "UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity".
