A. PROJECT TITLE
INNOVATIVE
TECHNIQUES
FOR
DUST
SUPPRESSION
IN
REVERSE
CIRCULATION DRILLING.
B. PROBLEM STATEMENT
A feature of reverse circulation pneumatic down-the-hole (DTH) hammer drilling system is
its ability to reduce the emission of respirable dust which is known to be harmful to drilling
workers and equipment. The enhanced dust control performance of the drilling system
requires better understanding and insight into the airflow behavior at the bottom of the
borehole. (Dongyu Wu, Kun Yin, Qilei Yin , Xinxin Zhang, Jingqing Cheng, Dong Ge and
Pengfei Zhang, 2016)
This project aims to develop and implement innovative dust suppression techniques to be
able to enhance dust control efficiency, protect workers heath and reduce environmental
pollution in reverse circulation drilling.
Due to how the process of this kind of drilling works, it uses air to be able to break the rocks
deep down the hole and flush out the samples out the hole to the surface of the earth which
some dsut from the drilling process escape to the atmosphere , that expose people to health
risk and environmental pollution. Dust affect our community negatively, human beings are
expose to air borne diseases,plants and trees are also affected. The large mining companies

who operates as open pit mines(surface mining) contributes to the pollution, because reverse
circulation drilling is being done in this kind of mining.
This project will explore and evaluates the effectiveness of various dust suppression
techniques that help to reduce the pollution of the environment, these techniques include
but not limited to: advance dust collector, wet drilling, water mist flushing, innovative drill
bits, dust extraction techniques, water sprays and computation fluid dynamics (CFD)
multiphase modeling. By implementing these innovative approaches, the project aims to
identify the most suitable and effective solutions that can be part of Reverse Circulation
drilling rigs to achieve the maximum dust suppression
C. PROJECT OBJECTIVES
The objectives of the study are to :
i. Assess the current dust suppression methods in Reverse Circulation drilling be able
to bring out their limitations;
ii. Research and develop new dust suppression technologies and techniques;
iii. Evaluate the performance of these innovative techniques through field work and
data analysis and
iv. Bring out the most effective dust suppression solutions in Reverse Circulation
drilling operation.
D. EXPECTED OUTCOMES
By the conclusion of this project, the following outcomes are anticipated:
i. The expected outcome of this project when complete is to be able to suppress dust
being produce in Reverse Circulation drilling;
ii. To ensuring smooth and risk free operation and get our sample without not being
contaminated; and
iii. To ensure suitability of the bore hole and case steading.
