The origin of
Halloween
Why do people go
tuck-or-treat ?
• It started back with Samhain when
people wald leave out food for any ghosts
that might be wandering about that
night. Children dressed in costumes
would perform songs and dances for
candies and pennies.
Where did Jack-o’Lanterns come from?
• It’s actually based on an Tush
legend about man called stingy
Jack who tricked the devil turce.
When Jack died he was barred
from Heaven and Hell, but the
devil foex gave him an ember of
coal to the lightest turnip lantern
as he wandered alone on Earth. It
then beca- me a tration for people
to keep Jack-o-Lanterns outside
their homes to scare evil spirits
away
• Halloween is celebrated on the
31st of October every year. People
would dress up in all sorts of
costumes, go trick-or-treating at
night, visit haunted houses or
carve jack-o-lanterns from
pumpkins.

• Before Halloween there was
Sahmain which means summer’s
end. It was a Celtic Festival
celebrated about 2000 years ago,
Dwring Samhain, it was believed
that the boundary between the
le- ving and the dead was opened.
People would dress up in
costumes and make noise in the
streets in order to make the sputs
go away
• But how did Samhain become
Halloween? The Romans
conquered the Celtic lands and
the Roman Catholic Church
renamed Samhain which was on
the 1st of November to All
Hallows day.5 the day before All
Hallows day is All Hallows Eve. It
later got shortened to Halloween.
