Documenting the Legacies and Performance of Bangsamoro Sports Icon, Exceptional, and World Class Athletes and Coaches: A basis in Developing Visual Archive 2024 JUNAIDEE S. JASANI, Ed.D 1 Executive Summary This study comprehensively examines and celebrates the rich athletic heritage of the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM). The study directly addresses the critical deficiency in the documentation and recognition of Bangsamoro sports figures, whose significant contributions remain underrepresented in national and international sports narratives. The research methodology employed a rigorous qualitative approach, incorporating primary data collection methods such as surveys and key informant interviews, supplemented by secondary data sources including documentary analysis and online photographic research. This ensured a thorough and nuanced understanding of the athletes' journeys, achievements, and broader societal impact. Key findings demonstrate the transformative potential of sports in fostering unity, cultural pride, and inspiration, particularly among the youth of Bangsamoro communities. The research meticulously compiled a detailed inventory of Bangsamoro sports icons, exceptional and world-class athletes, and exemplary coaches, highlighting their contributions to both athletic achievement and community development. The documented achievements serve as powerful role models, promoting physical activity and healthy competition, while simultaneously fostering a strong sense of cultural pride and reinforcing community identity. Furthermore, the study underscores the critical need for substantial investment in sports infrastructure, training programs, and resources to cultivate future generations of athletes within the region. The research culminates in a series of recommendations, including the development of a high-quality visual archive in the form of a coffee table book, advocating for increased policy support for sports development within BARMM, implementing comprehensive community engagement initiatives, and establishing formal recognition and awards programs to honor the contributions of Bangsamoro athletes and coaches. In conclusion, this study underscores the vital importance of documenting and celebrating the achievements of Bangsamoro sports figures to promote regional pride, inspire future generations, and advocate for the sustained development of sports within the region. The creation of a visual archive serves as a crucial step towards empowering the Bangsamoro community and amplifying the transformative power of sports as a unifying and inspirational force. 2 Policy Issue The lack of comprehensive data on athletes' achievements hinders accurate assessments of regional sports performance and the formulation of policies to promote and develop sports in the region (Hong et al., 2020). Without proper documentation and recognition, the impact of sports figures on local and national sports development remains largely unacknowledged, diminishing their achievements and limiting opportunities to foster local and community engagement through sports. (Uperesa & Mountjoy, 2014) In response, this research seeks to highlight the transformative power of sports in uniting and inspiring Bangsamoro communities, particularly the youth, through the stories of Bangsamoro sports icon, exemplary, and world class athletes. As Nelson Mandela eloquently stated, "Sport has the power to change the world and unite people in a way that little else does"(Mandela 2018). Furthermore, the research aims to create a visual archive of Bangsamoro sports heroes, showcasing their achievements through a coffee table book. It will document sports icons, exceptional athletes, world-class athletes, and regional coaches. The book will also include photographic documentation of Bangsamoro sports figures and assess the overall number of athletes with achievements. By showcasing the number of medal-winning and podium-finishing athletes, we can demonstrate the region's athletic prowess and advocate for the investments needed to nurture it. This research will be foundation for building a stronger, more inclusive, and thriving sports community in the Bangsamoro, inspiring generations of athletes to come. Methodology The study adopted a multifaceted qualitative approach to document the achievements and contributions of Bangsamoro sports figures. This involved a combination of primary data collection methods, including surveys, key informant interviews, and photographic documentation, alongside secondary data collection methods, such as documentary analysis and online photographic research. This approach ensured a rich and nuanced understanding of the athletes' journeys and their impact on the Bangsamoro region. Key Findings A comprehensive list of Bangsamoro Sports Heroes, composed of sports icons, exemplary athletes, and world-class athletes and coaches, was documented, showcasing the rich athletic talent originating from the BARMM. These individuals have not only excelled in their respective sports but have also contributed positively to their communities. Their accomplishments can serve various purposes: 3 Inspiration and Role Models: The stories and achievements of these athletes can inspire young people to pursue sports, fostering a culture of physical activity and healthy competition. Cultural Pride: Recognizing these athletes helps cultivate a sense of pride and identity among the Bangsamoro community, reinforcing the importance of cultural heritage and unity. Promotion of Sports Development: Highlighting the successes of these heroes can attract attention to the need for improved sports infrastructure, training programs, and resources within the region. POLICY RECOMMENDATIONS To effectively harness the achievements of Bangsamoro Sports Heroes and promote sports development, the following policies are recommended: Institutionalize the establishment of a comprehensive Bangsamoro Sports Archive as an official repository of records, profiles, and achievements of Bangsamoro athletes and coaches. This archive will serve as a tool for historical preservation, research, and education while promoting regional pride and unity. The archive should include multimedia materials, such as videos, photographs, and publications, to provide a dynamic and interactive resource for policymakers, researchers, educators, and the community. Production and Distribution of the "BANTUGAN" Bangsamoro Sports Icon Book Publish and distribute the "BANTUGAN" book, a compilation of the achievements and contributions of Bangsamoro Sports Icons, Exceptional Athletes, World-Class Athletes, and Coaches. The book will serve as a key educational and promotional tool to highlight Bangsamoro excellence in sports. Partner with schools, libraries, and community centers for wide distribution to ensure accessibility across the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region. Special focus should be placed on integrating its content into educational curricula to inspire the youth. Establishment of a Bangsamoro Sports Hall of Fame: Create a dedicated space to honor and celebrate the contributions of Bangsamoro Sports Heroes. This hall of fame would serve as a source of inspiration and a historical archive for future generations. Development of a Comprehensive Sports Database: Establish a centralized database that catalogs the achievements and profiles of Bangsamoro athletes and coaches. This resource would be invaluable for policymakers, sports organizations, and researchers seeking to understand and promote sports development. Promotion of Community Sports Initiatives: Implement grassroots programs that encourage sports participation among youth in the Bangsamoro region. These initiatives could include school-based sports programs, community leagues, and talent identification efforts. 12 Support for Athlete Development: Provide scholarships, training camps, and mentorship opportunities for promising athletes and coaches. This support can help cultivate a new generation of high-performing sports figures in the region. Leverage Sports for Economic Development: Explore opportunities to promote sports tourism and attract national and international sporting events to the region, thereby boosting the local economy and creating job opportunities. Conclusion The recognition of Bangsamoro Sports Heroes is a crucial step toward fostering a vibrant sports culture in the Bangsamoro region. By implementing these policy recommendations, the region can capitalize on the achievements of its athletes, inspire future generations, and create a supportive environment for sports development. This not only honors the legacy of past athletes but also lays the groundwork for a brighter future in Bangsamoro sports.
