2024 Administer Medication via NGT
Steps
1. Identify the patient with 2 identifiers (Name, DOB, or
Medical Record #) and assess for Allergies.
2. Preparation: Wash hands or use hand sanitizer
3. Review the medication order and select the right
medications using the 5 rights. Calculate correct amount
to administer.
4. Obtain required supplies needed: medication cup/med,
60 mL Toomey Syringe, pH strips, Pill crusher, tap water
• 30 mL/med
• 30 mL- flushing
5. Prepare the medication(s) for administration:
• Crush medication (if allowed)
• Add tap water and allow to dissolve for 2-5 min
6. Educate the patient regarding the medication.
7. Position patient with HOB @ 45°
8. Don clean gloves
9. Measure length of exposed NGT and compare it to
documented length.
10. Attach the Toomey syringe to the tube & aspirate
contents (noting color and consistency) and check pH.
• Verbalizes correct gastric content pH
• Returns aspirated gastric contents.
11. Verbalize a request for x-ray verification if concerned
about placement.
12. Flush NGT with 30 mL of tap water
13. Administers the medication accordingly.
14. Flush NGT with 30 mL of tap water
15. Clamp the NGT
16. Remove gloves and perform hand hygiene.
17. Verbalizes the documentation of NG placement
verification, medication administration, and patient
response.
18. Before leaving room, ensure patient is covered; bed in
lowest position; side rails & HOB raised; call-bell in reach
