REFLECTION
Through analysis of my status set in relation to gender, I have gained insight into exactly how
these assumptions influence my experiences and perspectives. As a student, I realized that
even though accountancy is considered a gender-neutral field, there are still underlying biases
that filter views on my capabilities. For example, the idea that women are good with details
but less aggressive toward challenges requires me to dislodge those stereotypes.
In other roles, such as being a daughter or a sibling, I noticed how traditional gender roles
shape responsibilities, with expectations of caregiving and emotional support overly placed on
women. While I align with some of these roles, they often feel limiting when they’re seen as
default because of my gender.
The surprising thing is how deeply these norms impact my self-perception and how others
treat me in different roles. This has motivated me to work for more equitable expectations and
challenge biases in both personal and professional fields. This exercise reinforced the
importance of questioning societal norms and embracing roles based on individual strength
rather than preconceived notions of gender.
