CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION
This chapter contains the background of the study, statement of the problem,
significance of the study, and scope and delimitations.
Background of the Study
Mathematics is the science of numbers, their operations, relationships,
combinations, generalizations, and abstractions, as well as the structure, measurement,
transformations, and generalizations of spatial arrangements. Algebra, arithmetic, calculus,
geometry, and trigonometry are some of the branches of it (Bellis, 2021). Geometry is the
area of mathematics that deals with the characteristics of space and the shapes of particular
things as well as the interactions between them in space. It is one of the oldest fields of
mathematics and gets its name from Greek terms that mean "Earth measuring." It evolved
in reaction to real-world issues like those in surveying (Heilborn, 2022). In addition, Russel
(2018) claimed that the study of geometric relationships, using the coordinate system, and
evaluating the characteristics of two- and three-dimensional shapes are all heavily
emphasized throughout high school. Logic, logical reasoning, analytical reasoning, and
problem-solving are just a few of the mental abilities that are developed while studying
geometry.
Several studies (Aboagye et al., 2021; Tambychik, Subahan, and Meerah (2010)
claimed that majority of the students have weak visual-spatial, informational, shapeorientation, inter-problems relationship forming, memorization, and connected facts
remembering skills. More specifically, there are many reasons why learners struggle to
master geometry. Additionally, in the study of Solihatun (2019), found out that students
have difficulty working on the narrative test in geometry. It is widely acknowledged that
students have difficulty explaining and calculating circumference and square area,
rectangular and triangular, and second-rank relations with square roots.
The Mamiala et al (2020) claimed that students lack of interest and understanding
of geometry is a factor in learners’ poor performance in geometry. According to Marsh et
al. (2018), test performance and academic grades were linked to mathematical self-concept.
Moreover, Peteros et al (2020), revealed that Mathematics academic performance is
affected by the students’ self-concept. Lastly, problem solving skill affects the academic
performanceof students in mathematics.
Thus, the researchers came up with the idea of determining the relationship between
self-concept, attitude, and problem-solving skills towards solving geometric problems
among grade 9 students in Don Carlos M. Mejias Memorial National High School, that
will serve as a basis for developing geometry curriculum.
Statement of the Problem
The researchers conduct this study to determine the relationship between the senior
high school strands towards the academic performance among Mechanical Engineering
students in Romblon State University.
Specifically, it seeks to answer the following questions:

1. What is the demographic profile of the respondents as to senior high school strand?
2. What is the academic performance of the respondents?
3. Is there a significant difference on academic performance of the respondents in
terms of sex?
4. Is there a significant relationship between the chosen senior high school strands
towards academic performance among the respondents?
Significance of the Study
This study aims to know the relationship of self-concept, attitude, and problemsolving skills towards geometric problems of grade 9 students of Don Carlos M. Mejias
Memorial National High School that will serve as the basis for developing geometry
curriculum. This study would be significant and would have a great impact to the
following:
Grade 9 students. Grade 9 students will know their self-concept, attitude, and problemsolving skills towards geometric problems. This knowledge will guide them as they aim to
improve their performance in geometry.
Mathematics teachers. Mathematics teachers will know the students’ self-concept,
attitude, and problem-solving skills towards geometry problems, hence the findings of this
study will serve as their basis in making decision on what approach to use in order to help
the students improve performance in geometry.
School Administrations. The school will know the students’ self-concept, attitude, and
problem-solving skills towards geometry problems, hence the findings of this study will

serve as their basis in making decision on what approach the teacher to use in order to help
the school’s performance in geometry.
Parents. This research study would serve as guide for the parents on how well are their
sons’/daughters’ self-concept, attitude, and problem solving skills in geometry.
Future Researchers. This study would serve as reference and guide to the future
researchers who would conduct a study related to this project.
Scope and Delimitation of the Study
This study deals with knowing the relationship between self-concept, attitude and
problem-solving skills towards geometric problems among grade 9 students in Don Carlos
M. Mejias Memorial National High School, that will serve as a basis for developing
geometry curriculum. The respondents are only limited to one hundred fifty-nine (159)
grade 9 students in Don Carlos M. Mejias Memorial National High School.
The principal data gathering instrument to be used in the study is a survey
questionnaire which includes series of questions to be answered by the respondents and a
problem-solving performance test which is composed of geometry problems. The
researchers conduct the study at Don Carlos M. Mejias Memorial National High School,
Panangcalan, San Fernando Romblon during the second semester of the academic year
2022-2023.
