This established system envisioned to holistically develop learners become globally competent where skills and necessary competencies are met. In this perceived scenario, the challenges of teachers to exert effort in teaching, be updated with current teaching models and consider the individual differences of learners became an enormous challenge of every educator of the country especially at this time of remote teaching. One certain task that teachers to continually function is to help all types of learners especially learners who have not met the academic requirements of the discipline. In the study of Mercado (2015), there is this group of learners who need to be considered by teachers is the Alternative Learning System (ALS) students. The data revealed that the students had maximal problems in the content and instruction. They also encountered more problems in the length of the program or course. This clearly speaks of an urgent solution to the cited problem and hook interest of these ALS learners to keep them learning even within this time of pandemic. Furthermore, the group of students in Davao del Sur School of Fisheries led by Canete (2019) conducted a study on ALS learners’ challenges and revealed that the Alternative Learning System (ALS) learners experienced class participation problems and one participant of this study confessed and said, “we lack foundation of the subjects because we only have met once in a week before 4 and it is hard for us to submit the accomplished learning activity sheets on time”. In addition, based on the record of the class adviser, frequently, there are only 30-35 out of 96 enrolled ALS learners of School Year 2021-2022, Second Semester who can submit the accomplished learning activity sheets on time. This clearly cites that there are ALS learners who are not submitting their accomplished learning activity sheets. This also calls an action to be exemplified and this motivated the proponents to conduct an intervention that would immediately address the pressing problems especially, the incomplete submission of accomplished learning activity sheets in Practical Research 1 subject. The findings of this study can be used to motivate learners to do their responsibility for learning’s sake and can be used as guide to devise other teaching interventions that would help increase learners’ participation in learning. II. PROPOSED INNOVATION, INTERVENTION AND STRATEGY To address the cited problem, this devised technique called “HuE-based Affirmative Reinforcement Tool (HEART)” aims to motivate Grade 11- ALS learners to completely perform the tasks in Practical Research 1 as indicated in their Learning Activity Sheets (LAS) and submit the accomplished LAS along with academic honesty, completeness and punctuality. This technique is anchored on Incentive Theory of Motivation developed by B. F. Skinner that states people are motivated by a drive for incentives and reinforcement and argues that people are more motivated to perform activities if they receive a reward afterward, rather than simply because they enjoy the activities themselves (Lumen, 2018). 5 This HEART Technique will be given to 96 Senior High School -Alternative Learning System (ALS) Grade 11 learners of Davao del Sur School of Fisheries, Bagumbayan, Malalag, Davao del Sur. These 96 ALS learners will be the target participants and they will be performing the designed intervention of this action research. This intervention will run for three months of School Year 2021-2022 in Practical Research I classroom. ALS learners will be invited and their voluntary participation will be accounted. Further, this HEART Technique basically will use heart shapes with different colors to be used in recognizing learners’ efforts in completing their learning activity sheets with honesty, completeness and punctuality. Thus, this technique will unfold following these salient phases: ORIENTATION PHASE. The proponents will be conducting an orientation to all Grade 11 ALS learners about the purpose, procedures, duration and time of implementation of this devised technique. IMPLEMENTATION PHASE. This implementation phase will run for three months. During this phase, the proponents will virtually monitor the learners’ activity when it comes to accomplishing their learning activity sheets in Practical Research 1. They will be reminded all the time in their respective chat rooms as to completion and date of submission of the LAS. In this phase as well, the distribution and retrieval of the learning activity sheets and the self-learning modules will also be monitored. The school practices two weeks row submission of accomplished learning materials in-school basis. In this time of implementation, when learners submitted the LAS on time, the LAS will be 6 checked and evaluated following these criteria in the checklist; accomplished LAS is only answered by the learner himself/herself by scrutinizing the penmanship comparing it with the submitted written data in a form, activities in the LAS are completely answered and the accomplished LAS is submitted on time. RECOGNITION PHASE. After the evaluation and checking of LAS submitted by the learners, the proponents will now recognize learners who have met the criteria in the checklist as mentioned above. The proponents will give: Printed YELLOW HEART to learners who have answered the LAS through his/her own self alone, all activities in the LAS are accomplished, LAS submitted on time. When learners received this yellow heart means they earned 5 points to be added on their points in Performance Task. Printed GREEN HEART to learners who have met 2 indicators in the checklist. When learners received this green heart means they earned 3 points to be added on their points in Performance Task. Printed BLACK HEART to learners who have met 1 indicator in the checklist. When learners received this black heart means they earned 1 point to be added on their points in Performance Task. This recognition phase will be observed every scheduled distribution of modules and other learning materials to learners. CONCLUDING PHASE. This phase of the intervention will be the awarding ceremony. Summing up all aspects of active participation by learners through 7 awarding some learning materials that can be used in continuing their studies and certificates of recognition for their active participation. Learners who will be noted excelling in this intervention will be recognized during this phase as honorable; yellow honorable means they frequently excelled in the submission, green honorable means they sometimes excelled in the submission and black honorable if learners have exemplified at least 1 indicator in this technique. III. ACTION RESEARCH QUESTIONS This study aims to determine the efficacy of the formulated HuE-based Affirmative Reinforcement Tool (HEART) Technique when applied to Grade 11SHS-ALS Learners of Davao del Sur School of Fisheries for School Year 20212022. Specifically, this study aims to answer the following qualitative and quantitative questions: 1. What is the level of assessment of Grade 11- SHS ALS learners on the conducted HEART technique in terms of? 1.1. Learners’ Orientation, 1.2. Intervention Implementation, and; 1.3. Awarding? 2. How does HEART technique address the incomplete submission of the accomplished Learning Activity Sheets in Practical Research 1? 8 IV. ACTION RESEARCH METHODS This section contains sets of procedures to be carefully adhered by the researchers in order to systematically perform the necessary actions in addressing incomplete submission of learning activity sheets in Practical Research 1. This action research will use descriptive quantitative and qualitative design. Descriptive quantitative design concerns about describing the nature, characteristics and components of the population or phenomenon (Faltado, Bombita, Boholano & Pogoy, 2016). Whereas, qualitative research design reveals the participants range’ of views and perspectives with reference to specific topics or issues (Henson & Soriano, 2016). In this action research, the assessment of Grade 11- SHS ALS learners on the activities conducted that comprise HEART technique will be measured and the views of the participants as to HEART technique address the incomplete submission will be recorded and analyzed. Also, this section includes the comprehensive discussion of the target participants, a way to gather them and the instruments to use, a way to analyze the data and the ethical consideration to be ensured. Participants and/or Other Sources of Data and Information The participants of the study will be ninety-six (96) enrolled Senior High School ALS in Grade 11 who have Masonry and Food and Beverages Services specialization. These 96 ALS learners will be identified based from the learners’ record in School Form 1 of the adviser and they will be involved in answering 9 the adapted research instrument in collecting the quantitative data of the study. Also, these 96 ALS learners are to be directly identified as participants of the study anchoring on sampling called non-probability or nonrandom technique selection of participants. This technique as classified is called purposive sampling technique particularly, Total Population Sampling (TPS). This TPS is a technique where the entire population that meet the criteria are included in the research being conducted (Etikan, Musa & Alkassim, 2016). Whereas, Grade 11 ALS learners who will be awarded as yellow, green and black honorable will be included in the in-depth interview as a way to collect the qualitative data of the study. In this case, still purposive sampling particularly following the Homogeneous Sampling technique of selecting participants will be adhered. This sampling follows the idea on focusing the precise similarity and how it relates to the topic being researched (Etikan, Musa & Alkassim, 2016). In this manner, the similarity of learners who will be interviewed is that participants are awarded as honorable in the HEART technique. The participants’ identities will be safeguarded and respected. Data Gathering Methods In gathering the data, the following steps will be observed in order to secure accurate information and obtain the necessary approval and permit to actualize this study. Seeking permission to conduct the study. First, the researchers will send a letter of request to the School Principal to ensure that the conduct of the 10 intervention activities are fully permitted and also, the minimum health protocols are considered in materializing the intervention. Seeking approval and endorsement of the District Research Committee. In this stage, the researchers will seek the approval and endorsement of the District Research Committee Coordinator to qualify for Division Research Committee scrutiny. Seeking approval of the proposed action research study from the Division Research Committee. This phase explains about the researchers’ desire in making the endeavor be known by the Division Research Committee and be approved by the Division Superintendent as qualifier for Basic Education Research Fund (BERF) for examination and funding. Seeking approval of the proposed action research study from the Regional Research Committee. This phase speaks about the researchers’ aspiration in realizing the endeavor be known by the Regional Research Committee and be approved by the Regional Director for Basic Education Research Fund (BERF) Grant. Conduct the Proposed Intervention- the HEART Technique. In this stage, the activities under the HEART will be deliberately executed in accordance with the ethics of research and based also in the known minimum health protocols. Administration and retrieval of the questionnaires and conduct in-depth interview. In this stage, the researchers will give the pre-informed consent to 11 seek the approval of the participants before the distribution of the survey questionnaire and the in-depth interview will take place after. Recording, tallying and tabulating of the gathered data. The responses will be recorded, tallied and tabulated in preparation for the statistical treatment of the quantitative data and thematic coding analysis will be used in analyzing the qualitative data. Furthermore, the study will use the survey questionnaire adapted from the identified and reliable authors in gathering quantitative data as acknowledged in the questionnaire itself. The questionnaire has two (2) parts. The first part askes the participants about their profile which is deemed as significant in knowing the respondents of this study. The second part contains of items about the assessment of ALS learners in the activities conducted under HERT Technique. On the other hand, to gather the qualitative data, a formulated in-depth interview guide questionnaire will be used. The researchers will submit both the qualitative and quantitative instruments to three (3) experts for content validation. After the validation, the researchers will follow the suggestions for refinement purposes of the instrument. The scales in the next page will be used in interpreting the quantitative data to determine the efficacy of the conducted HEART Technique as a formulated technique to be used in addressing the incomplete submission of the accomplished Learning Activity Sheets in Practical Research 1. 12 Mean Interval 4.20-5.00 3.40-4.19 2.60-3.39 Descriptive Rating Excellent Descriptive Interpretation The Learners ‘Orientation, Implementation and Awarding that comprise HEART Technique is 100% effective in addressing the incomplete submission of Accomplished Learning Activity Sheets in Practical Research 1. Very Good The Learners ‘Orientation, Implementation and Awarding that comprise HEART Technique is 67-99% effective in addressing the incomplete submission of Accomplished Learning Activity Sheets in Practical Research 1. Good The Learners ‘Orientation, Implementation and Awarding that comprise HEART Technique is 34-66% effective in addressing the incomplete submission of Accomplished Learning Activity Sheets in Practical Research 1. 1.80-2.59 Fair 1.00-1.79 Poor The Learners ‘Orientation, Implementation and Awarding that comprise HEART Technique is 133% effective in addressing the incomplete submission of Accomplished Learning Activity Sheets in Practical Research 1. The Learners ‘Orientation, Implementation and Awarding that comprise HEART Technique is 0% effective in addressing the incomplete submission of Accomplished Learning Activity Sheets in Practical Research 1. Data Analysis Plan In analyzing the quantitative data, the researchers will use statistical tools in accordance with what the question is measuring. In question 1 of the action research, the researchers will employ the descriptive statistics particularly the mean in knowing the level of learners’ assessment of the activities conducted 13 that comprise HEART Technique. SPSS is the tool that will be used in generating the data and finding the accurate results and it will be presented using table for data presentation. Likert scale is the scale [Excellence (5), Very Good (4), Good (3), Fair (2), and Poor (1) will be used by the researchers in analyzing the answers of the respondents on items indicated in the action research questionnaire. On the other hand, the generated qualitative data that will answer question 2 of this action research will be organized and analyzed using Descriptive Analysis of Colaizzi (1978) which identifies the significant statements, formulate meaning, theme cluster and emergent theme. This will be done to supplement the quantitative data and strengthened the general aspect of the study. Ethical Consideration An ethical consideration is one of the most important components in doing qualitative and quantitative research. Interactions between the researcher and the participants are subject to ethical issues such as privacy, honesty, openness and misrepresentations (Warusznski, 2002). In addition, Richards and Schwartz (2002) stated the following areas to be seriously considered: anonymity, confidentiality and informed consent and participants’ validation and checking. Anonymity. To keep the participants identity, the researchers will use pseudonyms which are P1, P2, P3…. and so forth as participant 1, participant 2, participant 3 and so on. It is one way to protect the participant’s identity where their real names are being hidden. Anonymity would be highly observed so that 14 the identity of the participants is protected (Corti et. al 2000). This will be applied in both qualitative and quantitative presentations of data. Confidentiality. In this matter, the researchers will secure that any information, including the names, places and other details and other personal information of the participants be kept confidential. Confidentiality is considered to be in line with anonymity and should be sustained to the highest extent and it has a goal of protecting the participant’s identity (Crow & Wiles, 2008). Informed Consent. In this concern, the researchers will give informed consent form to the participants before conducting an in-depth interview that comprise procedures and other related actions which will unfold in data collection. The researchers will ask permission and confirmation if whether they are willing to be interviewed as one of our participants. Also, the researchers will make sure to explain the content of the consent form clearly and free from coercion. This will help solidify the content of the study. 15 V.
