(1) MOUNTAIN DEFORESTATION IN MOUNT MALARAYAT BATANGAS
Background: Mount Malarayat in Batangas has been extensively deforested due to agricultural
growth, unlawful logging, and land development. Deforestation has a significant chemical effect
on the soil, water, and atmosphere, in addition to the ecosystem itself.
Chemical Concepts: Deforestation on Mount Malarayat interferes with the carbon cycle and
affects soil and water chemistry. This contributes to rising air pollution, emphasizing the
importance of sustainable forest management and replanting.

(2) SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT IN TAFT AVENUE, MANILA
Background: Taft Avenue, a rapidly growing and heavily urbanized region of Manila, faces
serious issues in solid waste management. Given the large volume of trash created by
residential, commercial, and institutional sources, proper waste management is vital for reducing
environmental damage and public health threats.
Chemical concepts: (1) Organic waste decomposes in landfills, releasing methane and CO2.
Methane, a strong greenhouse gas, highlights the need for efficient waste management to
reduce emissions. (2) Recycling breaks down waste into chemical components that may be
reused, lowering the need for raw resources. Proper recycling may reduce environmental impact
and control plastic waste, which remains as microplastics.

(3) Effect of rain acidity in the environment/plants/soil in DLSU Taft
Objectives:
Since Taft is quite a polluted area, we could take into consideration how the pollution affects the
pH level of the rain and the frequency of it (occurrence of acid rain/rain) and check the effect of
it on the environment, especially the soil as the campus is filled with plants and trees?

Car Pollution is a contributor in making acid rain.

Acid rain also removes minerals and nutrients from the soil that trees need to grow.

(4) Manila Bay Pollution: Manila Bay's chemical pollution and its effects on marine life
As a student who visits Manila Bay rarely and does not reside in Manila, I frequently
think about the bay's present condition. Is pollution still a problem in Manila Bay despite efforts
to clean it up? Considering the bay's proximity to a heavily populated urban area, this subject is
especially relevant. Its contamination is still mostly caused by home and industrial sewage,
agricultural waste water, and inappropriate trash disposal. These factors endanger marine life,
damage water quality, and endanger public health. To address this urgent environmental issue,
government initiatives, community involvement, and technical solutions are essential.
Nonetheless, the financial strain of cleanup operations along with the effects on the tourism and
fishing sectors highlight the difficulties in addressing Manila Bay pollution.
