INTRODUCTION
Students are generally expected to follow rules. Academic standards are what students
are expected to learn and achieve. Academic standards are set by grade (Lee, n.d.). It begins as
early as preschool and continues all the way through higher education. The many objectives of
academic standards are to set clear and measurable goals and make sure that every single one in
a curriculum is taught the same in terms of core values and fundamental skills. In basic terms,
standards tell you what are expected to learn. But academic standards in general are not so nice
to all students. Students with learning and thinking differences aren’t exempt from academic
standards. Like their peers, they’re expected to meet the standards and learn certain skills in each
grade (Lee, n.d.).
The majority of students feel the pressure of doing well in their studies. One of the terms
that are commonly used when talking about a student's success in school is academic
performance. In simpler terms, academic performance is how well one student is performing in
their school courses. The usual opinion of authors regarding academic performance is that it is
usually measured by exams, tests, and grades. Martinez (2007) stated that academic performance
is “the product given by the students and it is usually expressed through school grades”. For
Caballero et al. (2007), academic performance involves achieving goals, and objectives set in the
program or course that a student attends. But others believe that Academic performance does not
solely rely on tests and grades. For Lamas (2015), academic performance involves factors such
as intellectual level, personality, motivation, skills, interests, study habits, self-esteem, or the
teacher-student relationship.
In general, academic performance is a broad scale of measuring a student's capability as it
involves impressive test scores, also extracurricular accomplishments, leadership and initiative,
and many more factors. But according to Lamas (2015), the purpose of the school or academic
performance is to achieve an educational goal, learning.
This study wants to know the relationship between academic standards and students'
academic performance. It also aims to understand how students are coping and adjusting to
academic standards that are set in society.
